  • Custom 8 x 8 Inch Scan Stage with Nikon Nosepiece

    $1,289.00

This is a custom-engineered inspection station that can handle masks or wafers up to 200mm. It includes a motorized stage with 8 inches travel in X and Y. There is also a motorized Z-axis (focus) with over 1 inch of travel.

The stage is designed for work in transmitted light as well as reflected light – the aperture in the stage allows full excursion with the transmitted light illumination. The illuminator is quite simple – basically a fiber optic system placed behind a matte diffusion glass disk. The fiber optic cable is present, but the light source is not included.

The Z-axis drive uses a Bausch & Lomb Balplan industrial microscope focus system. It carries a cantilevered arm on which the upper limb of a Nikon Optiphot with motorized nosepiece has been fixed. The nosepiece accommodates four 26mm thread BD series bright-field / darkfield objectives (none are included). The arm also has the annular dovetail ring to accept the vertical illuminator, and on top of that, the viewing tube. The vertical illuminator and tube are not included.

The motor for the Z axis is a Vexta 2-Phase stepping motor, model PH265-02 (12v DC). Both the X and Y motors are Vexta 2-Phase Model PK266-03B. None of the motor drive electronics is present. There is a connector at the rear of the upper limb for control of the motorized nosepiece. No cable is present.

This system is in excellent condition. All motions can be actuated manually (there are knobs on both X and Y axis motors, and the original Bausch & Lomb focus drive knobs remain on the right side of the system.

This makes an excellent base for an inexpensive 8-inch inspection station.

  • Bausch & Lomb 20x Wide Field Stereo Microscope Ocular Pair

    $130.00

This is a used pair of Bausch & Lomb stereo microscope oculars, 31-15-64 02. These oculars are intended for use with the StereoZoom series of microscopes. The oculars, although identical in respect to optics, differ slightly in appearance. They both have the clear-coat anodized aluminum barrels but the engraving differs. The earlier lens used red-filled engraving and the older type B&L logo – the later type has black engraving and the newer logo. The only other difference is in the upper black anodized lens retainer ring – the earlier is designed for a pin spanner and the later for a slotted spanner.

     Magnification – 20x
     Eye relief – 9mm
     Barrel diameter – 23.2mm
Field-of-view index – 12mm (diameter of object field when using a 1x objective)

The glass is in near-perfect condition. The barrels do show some light evidence of use.

  • Achromatic Microscope Objective, 5:1, with

    $72.00

This is a conventional low magnification achromat microscope objective. It is useful for scanning larger areas of samples, and features a relatively long working distance. One unusual feature of this objective is the removable protective cover glass in a chrome threaded cell. An additional 2mm or so of working distance can be achieved when this cover has been unthreaded. Other lens characteristics remain essentially unchanged.

     Magnification – 5
     Numerical Aperture – 0.12
Objective thread – standard RMS (0.8 inch)
     Tube length – 160mm
     Adjustment length – 37mm
Working distance (cap installed) – 23.4mm
Manufactured in Germany by Rolyn Optics
     Catalog number – 80-3045

This appears to be a slightly earlier version of this lens. It is in excellent condition.

  • Periplan GW 10x / 28 High Eyepoint M Microscope

    $310.00

This is a single Leitz ultra-wide-field ocular of 30mm diameter tube. It is intended for use in the later vintage wide-field tubes that have a 160mm mechanical tube length. (They may also be used with infinity systems, since that is an optical tube length which is compensated for by the tube lenses within the microscope frame or nosepiece).

These lenses have a very high eyepoint in addition to a 28mm field-of-view index. The front eyelens is focusable. The ocular will accept reticles of 27mm diameter.

This lens is in near-perfect cosmetic condition except for some slight damage to the lower knurl, best seen in the third photograph. The ocular does not include the thread-on rubber eye guard. Leitz part number is 519 894. List price was $889 in 1996.

  • CFW 15x Wide-Field High-Eyepoint Ocular

    $70.00

This listing comprises an excellent Nikon CFW 15x wide field ocular. The eyepiece has a focusable eyelens. The built-in rubber eye guard is missing. The ocular is 23.2mm in diameter and is intended for use in compound microscopes such as the Optiphot.

The CF designation denotes chrome free, meaning that the color corrections within the ocular are independent of those of the objective. Many manufacturers balance the color corrections between the objectives and the oculars – using an objective from one manufacturer and an ocular from another is likely to result in over-correction of some aberrations, and under-correction of others. One of the reasons Nikon prefers to completely correct both oculars and objectives is that it eliminates the color fringe that is often seen about the periphery of the field of view diaphragm.

The glass appears to be free of all blemishes. The barrel shows very light signs of use. Unlike most of the Nikon CFW oculars I have seen, this one has white nomenclature instead of yellow, and the radial groove that indicates the point of nominal focus is left unfilled with pigment. Most likely it is an early iteration of the optic.

  • H.K.W. 8X Microscope Ocular, Marked Biâ€, Single

    $90.00

This is a very nice Nikon 18x ocular with fixed eyelens. It is equipped with an extendable eyeguard. This eyepiece is both widefield and high eyepoint. It is engraved H.K.W. 8x, and to one side ‘Bi’. The Bi means the diaphragm is critically set and sized so it can be easily mated with other similar oculars with the ‘Bi’ engraving

The condition is near mint – coatings are without flaws, and the barrel shows almost no signs of use. Unfortunately, we do not have a second ocular to form a pair.

This eyepiece probably dates from the 1970’s. It is suitable for use with the older ‘S’ stands (the black ones) as well as the Optiphots when equipped with the less expensive objectives. Later production instruments would have been outfitted with the more recent CF chrome-free objectives and oculars.

  • BD Plan 20 Metallurgical Microscope Objective 210

    $325.00

This microscope objective is corrected for looking at uncovered samples such as semiconductor wafers or metallurgical polished sections. It is capable of work with incident light darkfield, therefore the central objective is surrounded by an annular condenser / mirror system to direct light onto the sample. Because of the condenser system the 26mm / 0.75tpi thread size is larger than the standard RMS thread (20.3mm).

The objective is of the ‘finite’ series as opposed to infinity systems. It is corrected for a tubelength of 210mm. The 210 / 0 on the side of the barrel indicates both the tubelength and the coverglass correction – ‘0’ means strict adherence to uncovered samples is required.

    Characteristics of the objective include:

Magnification – 20x (green color band)
     Numerical Aperture – 0.40
     Working Distance – 2.5mm
     Correction Distance – 45mm
     Tube length correction – 210mm
Thread size – 26mm (BD thread)
     Flat field correction (Plan)

In addition to being excellent microscope objectives, this series of objectives is strongly favored for macro photography using image-stacking software. These are CF objectives, by which Nikon means ‘Chrome-Free’ – unlike most manufacturers who split the corrections for color aberrations between the objective and the ocular, the Nikon objectives and oculars are completely corrected independently of each other. This makes them especially suitable for stand-alone operation as macro lenses, although they will perform best when the image sensor is located reasonably close to the intended intermediate image plane. The chrome shroud of the BD series may also be completely removed leaving a very matte-black and relatively thin central objective – sometimes very advantageous in macro photography.

This objective is in near-perfect condition – the glass appears to be completely blemish-free.

     Numerical Aperture – 0.65
     Working Distance – 1.0mm
     Correction Distance – 45mm

  • Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer Type

    $220.00

Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer Type.

This is a very nice example of one of the famous series of Beck / Ealing reflecting objectives. When properly adjusted, they are free of chromatic aberrations because all surfaces are reflecting – there are no refractive elements. The radii of the two reflecting surfaces are chosen in a way to correct for primary spherical aberration; primary coma, and primary astigmatism.

While they can be used as conventional microscopy objectives, they are of very large dimensions, and will not be parfocal with conventional refracting objectives. This particular objective, with a 15x magnification and a numerical aperture of 0.28, is over 51 mm long not including the mounting thread, and over 46 mm in diameter – too wide to mount other objectives in adjacent thread positions on most nosepieces!

Unlike the higher magnification objectives in this series, the relatively low numerical aperture does not require the use of a correction collar for setting cover glass thickness. This objective has the standard aluminum coating, and the coating is in very fine condition on both primary and secondary. This objective does not include the cabinet and is missing the pair of Allen keys used to adjust the centration of the primary mirror, but they are of standard size and easily replaced. The instruction sheet for so doing is missing, as is a special target slide. The slide could be very easily replicated – it consists of a thin reflective substrate with a number of random circular voids that are used to adjust for coma. Centration can be accomplished in less than a minute.

    Features of the objective include:
     15x magnification
     0.28 numerical aperture
1.30 mm visual field of view
     24.5 mm working distance
     Standard RMS thread diameter
will work in near UV with standard coatings, as well as into the IR.

These objectives were sold in the United States by the Ealing Catalog Company. The Ealing part number for this objective, with the standard coating, is 25-0506-000.
Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer
    25-0506-000
Lens is in exceptional condition. It has the later type housing (not nickel-plated), and there are no blemishes in either mirror. This objective is currently supplied by Edmund Scientific in their ‘TechSpec Adjustable ReflX’ series – list price is now $2150.

  • MS Plan 20 Metallurgical Microscope Objective

    $420.00

This listing is for an Olympus metallurgical (or semi-conductor) microscope objective. The objective is in flawless condition. I could detect no blemishes either in the optical system or on the objective housing.

The objective is of recent vintage (mid-1990’s), and is corrected for use with infinity tube-length vertical illuminators. Important attributes of the objective can be summarized as follows:

     20x magnification
     0.46 numerical aperture
Corrected for infinity relay lenses with a back focal length of 180mm
     Insensitive to cover glass
S Plan designation indicates fully flat field including 26.5mm oculars

     Standard RMS thread (0.80 inches)
     NOT suited for dark field

45mm adjustment length (distance from specimen plane to objective thread seat)
     Standard RMS thread (0.80 inches)
     NOT suited for dark field
IC designation indicates suitability for Nomarski Interference Contrast or polarized light applications

The objective is suitable for use with the infinity vertical illuminator as found on the later BHM series instruments, as wsell as the Vanox II and III, the PME 3 and PMG 3 inverted metallographs, and the STM measuring microscopes. I am unsure about suitability to the more recent and current instruments. Olympus catalog number is 1-LM520.

  • Generic Achromat 10x / 0.25 Microscope Objective

    $25.00

These microscope objectives are conventional achromats of relatively simple construction. The only nomenclature on the objective housing is the magnification and the numerical aperture. There is no manufacturer’s mark, but the rear bezel is engraved ‘Japan’. They are ‘short mount’ objectives of 37mm adjustment length (distance from thread shoulder to specimen plane).

     Magnification – 10x
     Numerical Aperture – 0.25
     Adjustment Length – 37mm
     Corrected for 160mm tube length
     Standard RMS microscope thread

These objectives are in very excellent condition without any visible flaws to the optics. Tubes are of chrome-plated brass, and due to the relatively long working distance (several mm) there is no spring-loading of the optic assembly.
