This listing is for an Olympus metallurgical (or semi-conductor) microscope objective. The objective is in flawless condition. I could detect no blemishes either in the optical system or on the objective housing.

The objective is of recent vintage (mid-1990’s), and is corrected for use with infinity tube-length vertical illuminators. Important attributes of the objective can be summarized as follows:

20x magnification
0.46 numerical aperture
Corrected for infinity relay lenses with a back focal length of 180mm
Insensitive to cover glass
S Plan designation indicates fully flat field including 26.5mm oculars
3.10mm free working distance
45mm adjustment length (distance from specimen plane to objective thread seat)
Standard RMS thread (0.80 inches)
NOT suited for dark field
IC designation indicates suitability for Nomarski Interference Contrast or polarized light applications

The objective is suitable for use with the infinity vertical illuminator as found on the later BHM series instruments, as wsell as the Vanox II and III, the PME 3 and PMG 3 inverted metallographs, and the STM measuring microscopes. I am unsure about suitability to the more recent and current instruments. Olympus catalog number is 1-LM540T.

The M300PA micrometer slide has one inch of travel. The carriage is threaded to accept the standard Gaertner measuring microscopes and telemicroscopes. The carriage ways are precision hand-scraped, and the leadscrew is hand-lapped to the nut. There is a special cam that tilts the nut as the carriage is positioned, thereby correcting any residual errors in the pitch of the lead screw.

There is a one inch scale to indicate the coarse position of the carriage, and a precision graduated drum to indicate the fine position directly to 0.0005 inches, and to 0.0001 inches via the vernier. This version of the slide is not equipped with the 19mm post, instead it is meant to be mounded on the face opposite the drum. See the third photo.

It includes an unusual accessory for the Gaertner precision measuring slides. It consists of a rotary flange which can be installed in the threaded bush of the microscope carrier in place of the microscope. Once the bushing is installed, the angle bracket is fitted into the bushing and secured with a wingnut from beneath the slide carriage. The tension on the joint may be regulated by the wing nut.

The angle bracket has a large threaded bushing perpendicular to the plane of the slide. The internal thread of this bushing is identical to that used on the carriage slider, allowing instruments to be mounted at right-angles to the plane of motion. The direction of the instrument may be selected by rotating the entire bracket, and the orientation of the installed instrument may be adjusted by turning the bushing. There is a locking screw to clamp the bushing in the desired position.

In addition there is an end plate accessory used in conjunction with the angle bracket. It has a precision post that fits a slot in the angle bracket so the bracket is locked in one orientation during focusing. The endplate includes a pair of recirculating roller bearings so the entire slide assembly may be moved on a pair of precision rods (not included). There is a clamp nut for securing the assembly at a given location.

I have not seen these accessories illustrated in any of the literature, but it they are very well made. Both the slide and the angle bracket / end-plate assembly are in superb condition. The entire slide was rebuilt and relubricated. The only issue is a missing speed-crank handle on the cross-slide drum. The screw for securing the handle is still present.
