American Holgraphic SP00298-01 Hyperspectral Imaging

American Holgraphic SP00298-01 Hyperspectral Imaging.

When we got this instrument it was covered in reflective tape obviously prepped for some spacecraft or high-altitude mission. There are no adjustments to the monochromator, so there must have been a camera system that acquired the spectrum. The slit is fixed in one position and not adjustable in width. It appears to be about 0.1mm wide (rough estimate). The system appears to be in near-perfect condition, however, there are a couple of rub marks on one of the collimation mirrors near the margin.

There is a circular mounting plate that I assume held the acquisition system. There are a few degrees of freedom in the alignment of the plate. The slit is in the base of the monochromator (as seen in the first photo) whereupon the light is directed to a mirror that sends it to the first collimation mirror. The grating element itself is just beneath the large aperture facing forward in the second photo. The grating substrate is convex and fixed in place. It appears to be about 25 to 30mm in diameter (I did not open up the instrument), and the two collimation mirrors appear to be about 75mm in diameter again, just an estimate. The second collimation mirror directs the spectrum to the camera port.

There is a sticker on the instrument that identifies the manufacturer as American Holographic. The same sticker identifies the item as a catalog SP00298-01, serial number M2-016.

50mm Gimbal Mount with Diff. Micrometers

This item is a Micro-Controle (also known as Klinger, and now manufactured by Newport) SL type Gimbal optic mount. The SL gimbals are characterized by massive steel construction with two mounting flats for orthogonal positioning of the tilting axes so the controls are on the right or left side of the beam path. The two planes of tilt perfectly intersect the plane of the optic (often a mirror) so adjusting azimuth or elevation results in the reflection point always being stationary on the optic axis. The elements are held in place by a spring-loaded ring. There are three small bearing points to precisely locate the optic in the main yoke, and another three within the spring-loaded clamping ring. The securing screws are not quite symmetrically placed to aid in removal of elements through the slightly larger opening..

This particular gimbal mount uses the high-sensitivity differential BD micrometers. These micrometers feature both a course and a fine adjustment. Readings do not correspond to angular rotation, but they are repeatable, and graduated to 1 micron (sensitivity of setting is approximately 0.1 micron).

Specifications on this particular gimbal mount include:

 Optic diameter – 50mm
 Optic thickness – between 1 and 12.5mm
 Outside diameter – 124mm
Clear aperture of mount – 46mm
Approximate thickness of mount – 30mm (less micrometers)
Angular adjustment range – plus /minus 2 degrees

The mount is in superb condition – micrometers fully functional throughout range. There is only the slightest bit of surface corrosion present and very little evidence of use. This mount does not include the adapter plate. Those are listed independently as SKU number DP251 (they are only available with the purchase of a matching type gimbal).

2-inch Gimbal Mount less Lens Holder, less Bracket

This is a Burleigh gimbal mount for optics or mirrors of 2 inches diameter. It is a true gimbal – both the azimuth and elevation axes are co-planar with the front surface of the mirror cell. The mounts are exquisitely made from three basic castings – two for each of the gimbal planes and one for the supporting plate. There are three basic subassemblies to the mounts. The gimbal mount with the micrometer spindles; the removable optic carrier mount; and the angle support plate. This mount lacks the optic carrier and the angle support plate.

This version is a bit earlier – the micrometer spindles lack the large plastic adjustment rings for increased setting sensitivity. Each axis has internal springs to keep the gimbal plates in contact with the micrometer spindles, and in addition, a spring-loaded plunger to augment stability. The position of the plunger can easily be changed so it will be effective in the range of motion required.

The removable optic carrier is missing from this mount – currently there is a clear bore of 2.255 inches diameter. One could easily fabricate a mirror holder to fit the bore.

Dimensions:

Gimbal support plate – 4 inches wide, 4.75 inches tall (0.500 inches thick)
Optic axis height = 2 inches
Range of motion (azimuth and elevation) – approximately plus or minus 2 degrees
Modified Starrett 263 micrometers with large thimble rings
Overall depth with micrometers – 4 inches
 Minimum / Maximum mirror thickness – 0.25 / 0.60 inches.

Condition of everything is superb. The mounts have been rebuilt and the micrometer spindles cleaned and relubricated. This version of the mount is cast of light aluminum alloy as opposed to steel. Please note that the elevation spring plunger missing in the photos has been replaced!

Burleigh 2-inch Gimbal Mount with Elevation

This is a Burleigh gimbal mount for optics or mirrors of 2 inches diameter. It is a true gimbal – both the azimuth and elevation axes are co-planar with the front surface of the mirror cell. The mounts are exquisitely made from three basic castings – two for each of the gimbal planes and one for the supporting plate. There are three basic subassemblies to the mounts. The gimbal mount with the micrometer spindles; the removable optic carrier mount; and the angle support plate. These mounts all come complete with all three components.

This mount includes a special Piezo actuator bearing pad for the elevation micrometer. The actuator does not include the connection cable or the control unit to ramp the Piezo. The special Piezo system allows extraordinary positional sensitivity.

Both axes have internal springs to keep the gimbal plates in contact with the micrometer spindles, and in addition, a spring-loaded plunger to augment stability. The position of the plunger can easily be changed so it will be effective in the range of motion required.

The second assembly is the optic cell. This entire assembly is held in place by a large knurled collar from the back. It is possible to remove the cell from the gimbal mount in order to install the optic of interest. The cell is designed so the reference plane of the mirror sits precisely in the gimbal plane. The front of the cell is chamfered so almost the entire mirror surface may be used when the incident light angle is less than or equal to 45 degrees. The cell will accept mirrors between 0.25 and 0.50 inches in thickness without additional spacers (thinner mirrors require spacer rings). The optic carrier includes a threaded retaining ring for the mirror.

The last component is a right-angle bracket for attaching the gimbal mount to a table. The gimbal mounting support plate attaches to the bracket with four Allen cap screws.

Dimensions:

Gimbal support plate – 4 inches wide, 4.75 inches tall (0.500 inches thick)
Optic axis height = 2 inches
Range of motion (azimuth and elevation) – approximately plus or minus 2 degrees
Modified Starrett 263 micrometers with large thimble rings
Overall depth with micrometers – 4 inches
 Minimum / Maximum mirror thickness – 0.25 / 0.60 inches.

The base plate adapter (right-angle bracket) raises the optic axis height to 2.375 inches. Overall baseplate dimensions are 4 by 4 inches. The reference plane lies approximately 0.875 inches from the front of the base plate.

Listing includes gimbal mount, 2 inch optic cell with retainer, support bracket and Piezo units. Condition of everything is superb. The mounts have been rebuilt and the micrometer spindles cleaned and relubricated. The gimbal plates in these mounts are cast steel, not the much lighter aluminum alloy.

The last component is a right-angle bracket for attaching the gimbal mount to a table. The gimbal mounting support plate attaches to the bracket with four Allen cap screws. The rear portion of the angle plate has been milled away (see photo).

Dimensions:

Gimbal support plate – 4 inches wide, 4.75 inches tall (0.500 inches thick)
