BD Plan 20 Metallurgical Microscope Objective 210

This microscope objective is corrected for looking at uncovered samples such as semiconductor wafers or metallurgical polished sections. It is capable of work with incident light darkfield, therefore the central objective is surrounded by an annular condenser / mirror system to direct light onto the sample. Because of the condenser system the 26mm / 0.75tpi thread size is larger than the standard RMS thread (20.3mm).

The objective is of the ‘finite’ series as opposed to infinity systems. It is corrected for a tubelength of 210mm. The 210 / 0 on the side of the barrel indicates both the tubelength and the coverglass correction – ‘0’ means strict adherence to uncovered samples is required.

Characteristics of the objective include:

Magnification – 20x (green color band)
 Numerical Aperture – 0.40
 Working Distance – 2.5mm
 Correction Distance – 45mm
 Tube length correction – 210mm
Thread size – 26mm (BD thread)
 Flat field correction (Plan)

In addition to being excellent microscope objectives, this series of objectives is strongly favored for macro photography using image-stacking software. These are CF objectives, by which Nikon means ‘Chrome-Free’ – unlike most manufacturers who split the corrections for color aberrations between the objective and the ocular, the Nikon objectives and oculars are completely corrected independently of each other. This makes them especially suitable for stand-alone operation as macro lenses, although they will perform best when the image sensor is located reasonably close to the intended intermediate image plane. The chrome shroud of the BD series may also be completely removed leaving a very matte-black and relatively thin central objective – sometimes very advantageous in macro photography.

This objective is in near-perfect condition – the glass appears to be completely blemish-free.

Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer Type

Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer Type.

This is a very nice example of one of the famous series of Beck / Ealing reflecting objectives. When properly adjusted, they are free of chromatic aberrations because all surfaces are reflecting – there are no refractive elements. The radii of the two reflecting surfaces are chosen in a way to correct for primary spherical aberration; primary coma, and primary astigmatism.

While they can be used as conventional microscopy objectives, they are of very large dimensions, and will not be parfocal with conventional refracting objectives. This particular objective, with a 15x magnification and a numerical aperture of 0.28, is over 51 mm long not including the mounting thread, and over 46 mm in diameter – too wide to mount other objectives in adjacent thread positions on most nosepieces!

Unlike the higher magnification objectives in this series, the relatively low numerical aperture does not require the use of a correction collar for setting cover glass thickness. This objective has the standard aluminum coating, and the coating is in very fine condition on both primary and secondary. This objective does not include the cabinet and is missing the pair of Allen keys used to adjust the centration of the primary mirror, but they are of standard size and easily replaced. The instruction sheet for so doing is missing, as is a special target slide. The slide could be very easily replicated – it consists of a thin reflective substrate with a number of random circular voids that are used to adjust for coma. Centration can be accomplished in less than a minute.

Features of the objective include:
 15x magnification
 0.28 numerical aperture
1.30 mm visual field of view
 24.5 mm working distance
 Standard RMS thread diameter
will work in near UV with standard coatings, as well as into the IR.

These objectives were sold in the United States by the Ealing Catalog Company. The Ealing part number for this objective, with the standard coating, is 25-0506-000.
Ealing Beck 15x Reflecting Objective Newer
25-0506-000
Lens is in exceptional condition. It has the later type housing (not nickel-plated), and there are no blemishes in either mirror. This objective is currently supplied by Edmund Scientific in their ‘TechSpec Adjustable ReflX’ series – list price is now $2150.

US Laser First-Pulse Shutter, Integrated Safety

This is a US Laser standard optical bench carrier with three integrated components installed. There is no type label on the bottom of the carrier, but the components are similar in function to those of another carrier we have in inventory.

The first component is a First Pulse Shutter assembly similar to the one labeled type 1031-2 on a different carrier. However it has been fully integrated with the other two components which include a safety shutter and a front mirror kinemetric mount.

Both shutters appear to be gravity fail-safe type rotary solenoids if the solenoid loses power, the shutter flags automatically drop closed There is a warning light for safety shutter position indication. Shutter controller is not provided.

The kinemetric mount includes a standard US Laser R=90% at 1064nm mirror, part number USL 3403. Coating appears to be in perfect condition. Overall condition looks near-perfect. The only think I noted is that the beveled cowling for the laser beam baffle has broken away from the front of the carrier. This is an easily replaced component should it be deemed needed..

Kollmorgen Graduated Borescope Probe

Kollmorgen Borescope, (Electro-Optical Division). Borescope, Measuring Long Probe, Serial number 382.

Rigid probe housing, with right-angle mounted prism in probe tip (side window). Overall length of probe body is 550mm (21 5/8 inches). Distal end of probe is 0.370 inches (for 7.750 inches steps up to .875 inches in diameter (that portion is 13 inches long, with a conical connection between the two diameters. Large diameter is graduated in inches, with divisions every 0.100 inch.

Right-angle viewing with illumination via fiber optics. Fiber optic armor-clad, with illumination centering puck on distal end. Active bundle diameter is 0.162 inches. Length of fiber optic lead is approximately six feet. Diameter of adapter at fiber bundle end is 1.560 inches.

Magnification adjustment ring marked magnification factor, graduated from 1 to 8.5 (with 10 divisions between numbers). Changing this setting seemed not so much to change the magnification but the focus point of the borescope. The borescope is missing the ocular (captive threaded ring is present, but the ocular is missing). Using an ocular from another instrument I determined that the closest focus point is about 4.5 inches away from the side mirror, and by adjusting the ring, I was able to focus to infinity. Therefore this instrument is for looking into cavities you cannot focus on the wall of a bore that isnt much larger than the diameter of the probe.

McPherson Spectrogram-Measuring Microscope

This is a very rare item. It is a McPherson measuring microscope designed for critical measurement of spectral line separation. Plates can be scanned over an area of 250mm by 100mm. The measurement in the X-direction is via a scale on the front of the instrument graduated in single mms. Resolution is increased to 1 micron via a vernier on the 150mm diameter drum dial for the leadscrew. The leadscrew itself has a diameter of 25mm, with a pitch of 1mm.

The negative table can be released from the leadscrew easily for quickly checking other areas of the negative. The table can be moved in the Y-direction via a small knob on the left side of the platen, and the position read via a vernier to an accuracy of 0.1mm. There is also a small knob on the front of the table to the right which allows a very small adjustment of the theta angle so the negative scan is perfectly orthogonal.

No clamps are included for securing the spectral scans. There are bores on both sides of the long axis of the carrier, presumably for some sort of retaining system.

The microscope is suspended above the scan by a double-arm limb for extreme rigidity, but the focus adjustment is a conventional dovetail arrangement with rack & pinion. The microscope tube and focus drive are manufactured by Bausch & Lomb and date the instrument to the late 1950s or 1960s. There is a cross-line reticle in the focusable inclined ocular.

The instrument is missing the lamphouse, and the connection for the lamphouse appears to be unique. There is a standard fork-type 50mm adjustable microscope mirror in the base.

This is an incredibly finely crafted instrument in really spectacular condition (with a few minor chips in the paint on the back of the microscope support limbs). The leadscrew is in perfect condition, and all motions work flawlessly. The serial number of the microscope is 10024. Very uncommon.

American Optical 1860 Epi-Star Microscope

American Optical 1860 Epi-Star Microscope.

This is an American Optical EpiStar materials inspection microscope. It does not include anything other than the basic stand..

The Model 1860 Industrial Microscope stand has a very large yoke and is able to accommodate stages with up to 6 by 6 inches of travel. The stage is rigidly clamped to the microscope base and does not move during focusing. Instead, the nosepiece carrying the objectives is the only part that moves. The infinity corrected optics of the system allow moving the objectives relative to the rest of the stand without any loss in optical corrections..

The stand has a special super-long-life 20w halogen lamp (life rated at 10,000 hours) that is situated at the back of the stand. A filter turret has four positions one open, one diffusion disk, a daylight blue filter, and a strong green filter. A fully adjustable field iris is situated just forward of the filter turret.. The illumination train has a swing-out beam-splitter used for brightfield vertical illumination. When swung to one side using the lever on the right side of the microscope, the illumination flux is directed to an annular mirror just above the revolving nosepiece. The nosepiece will accommodate five objectives using RMS threads. The continuously regulating transformer is built into the base of the stand.

Stage, stage carrier bracket, observation tube, and optics will need to be sourced. Please check our website for available components.
