This is a Unisec Optical Goniometer Assembly 5706-A.

This is a most unusual device from the manufacturer W & L. E. Gurley of Troy, NY. It is a very precise rotary table with an dual optical pick-off. A special split-field microscope reads opposite sides of a very accurate glass scale housed in the circular compartment beneath the rectangular ‘U-shaped’ upper frame.

Gurley is one of the earliest and most well-respected U.S. manufacturers of surveying equipment and this device reflects the high quality for which the firm is known. Similar to a high-end optical theodolite, the microscope is able to read the rotation of the central fixture (about 4 inches in diameter) to an accuracy of 1 second of arc. Gurley received a patent for the readout system used in this device. By taking simultaneous readings on opposite sides of the scale the effects of very minor eccentricities of the scale to the rotation axis are to a great degree nulled.

The U-system holding the microscope is 7 inches wide. The table has a post of 0.625 inch diameter that extends on the underside of the system to a distance of 1 inch. The table is equipped with a clamp system with a micrometer adjustment screw for extremely fine positioning capability.

The system is housed in a very heavy duty wood cabinet of excellent construction. Both the instrument and the cabinet are in exceptionally fine condition. The illumination system for the scale requires a small 3v supply, not included (simple batteries will do). There are a couple of xerox copies included with the instrument, one on the theory of operation, and the other instructions for taking a reading through the microscope. One extra lamp is included. This is very uncommon instrument that probably dates from the 1960’s, possibly a bit more recent.

This item is a used early W. & L. E. Gurley surveyor transit (serial number 610248) in excellent condition. All knobs, levels, compass, and scope are in working codition.
The cosmetic condition of this item is remarkable with only a few small chips in the finish paint.

This item appears to be some sort of quadrature position sensing device, most likely used with a laser collimation system. The main housing, of heavy stainless steel, carries two labels. The first is a Keufel and Esser label with a part number ’71 2627′, and the second is a Cubic Precision final inspection sticker.

The main sleeve diameter is 2.250 inches, and the sleeve is 1 inch in length. The sleeve is stepped down to a diameter of 1.500 inches, and the step has black lacquer with four quadrant lines, three in white, and one in red. On the face of the stepped piece is a cover with a target circle 0.375 inches in diameter. The cover, when removed, reveals the active quadrature detector segments, each of which is bisected by one of the quadrant lines on the step. There is a cable from the rear of the housing with a special polarized nine-pin plug. We do not have the readout unit.

The second item furnished with the detector is a calibration plate in a sleeve mount that slides over the inner step. It has a red dot on it which I assume is supposed to be aligned with the red index mark. The cell for the plate is engraved ‘CALIBRATION .009 IN’. The glass plate is held at an angle within the cell and offsets the incident beam by exactly .009 inches in the direction of the red dot.

We have no way to test the detector, but there is no reason to believe it is not fully functional. The overall condition appears to be near perfect. There aren’t even any score marks on the main sleeve.

This is the simple Gaertner microscope body. It consists of a sleeve mount with a thumb screw for positioning a drawtube which is threaded on one end to hold an objective. The other end is a straight tube to accept various eyepiece tube adapter sleeves. The outer body has a 1 inch diameter thread so the microscope may be attached to various Gaertner instruments.

Because the sleeve does not have a rack and pinion for precise focus adjustment, the simple tubes are best used with the lower magnification objectives. For similar reasons, measuring reticles are best used in the rack and pinion versions because it is more difficult to precisely focus this type of tube.

The microscope bodies are in good condition. Mechanically they all work properly. This listing is for the microscope body only. It does not include objective, eyepiece adapter, or eyepiece. Please note that these instruments do not have locking collars on the microscope attachment thread.

The Gaertner Scientific M301A micrometer slide has two inches of travel. The carriage is threaded to accept the standard Gaertner measuring microscopes and telemicroscopes. The carriage ways are precision hand-scraped, and the leadscrew is hand-lapped to the nut. There is a special cam that tilts the nut as the carriage is positioned, thereby correcting any residual errors in the pitch of the lead screw.

There is a two inch scale to indicate the coarse position of the carriage, and a precision graduated drum to indicate the fine position directly to 0.0005 inches, and to 0.0001 inches via the vernier. A 19mm diameter post, 6 inches in length is permanently attached to the slide.

The slide is in excellent condition, and has been cleaned and relubricated.
