  • 90-Degree Image Rotator with Manual Positioning

    $250.00

This assembly was manufactured by Optical Specialties as a part of one of their measurement systems. It appears to be an image rotation system consisting of two separate motions. The upper portion of the mount revolves through an angle of about 90 degrees and is manually adjusted and clamped via a large knurled knob.

The lower portion of the system is electronically actuated (we have the cable but not the electronics) and appears to rotate a dove prism type assembly through an angle of 45 degrees which results in an image translation of 90 degrees. Rotation is not continuous, rather there are a pair of retro-reflector systems located in the periphery of the housing.

Seemingly, the user would adjust the camera or detector to one axis of a geometry using the manual setting, and then be able to switch rapidly between that position and a second position oriented 90 degrees away. Looking at the base of the system (third photo), the central portion within the chrome bearing is that part that rotates. The top mounting remains stationary.

This system was installed on the modified Nikon trinocular tube we have listed elsewhere. The upper portion has three set screws for securing the detector – it is not threaded.

  • Trinocular Viewing Tube with Modified Photo Port

    $360.00

Nikon Trinocular Viewing Tube with Modified Photo Port

This appears to be a conventional Nikon trinocular viewing head for the Optiphot series of microscopes that has been modified by Optical Specialties for use on one of their instruments. The binocular portion of the system is unchanged, as is the diverter prism for choosing between the observation portion of the tube and the photo tube.

However, the phototube has an extensive modification. The upper portion of the tube has a permanently-fitted sleeve along with a small relay lens system recessed within the tube. The annular dovetail for mounting the tube on the microscope stand is unaltered.

This tube was used with a special image rotation system (available separately). Cosmetically the tube is in great condition except for a couple of chips in the enamel of the base (see third photo). This may be used as a great source of spare parts to restore a damaged tube, or one could invest in a new diverter prism enclosure to bring it back to factory original condition. The optics are in perfect condition.

  • Arriflex Cine-Xenon 1:1.4 / 25mm Prime Lens

    $475.00

    Arriflex Cine-Xenon 1:1.4 / 25mm Prime Lens.

This is a very fine condition Arriflex Cine – Xenon objective in a standard Arriflex mount. Focal length is 25mm, and f = 1.4. Focus is likewise effortless without any play. Serial number is 11 729 120. Lens unfortunately does not have either front or rear caps, but it has been in very secure cushioned storage so it was never at risk of damage. The lens was manufactured by Schneider-Kreuznach. There is an additional number engraved on the side of the lens filled with green pigment, 1425. I am not sure of the significance of this number..

The objective is superb condition with a couple of minor exceptions. It is missing the chrome focus paddles, and the front bezel filter thread has a slightly crimped spot (next to the word Kreuznach) that might interfere with threading a filter onto the lens. Optically, the lens is in perfect condition, and the iris diaphragm works very smoothly throughout the range. Focusing is likewise smooth and without excess play.

  • Precision Micro-Leveling Mount with Multiple Ports

    $250.00

Precision Micro-Leveling Mount with Multiple Ports,

This is a very unusual component mount. It is very massive (over 10 pounds) and machined from solid aluminum. The block is 6 inches square and 3.5 inches tall. All of the threaded mounting holes appear to be metric. Both the base and the top (not sure which is which) have a 125mm square bolt hole pattern threaded for M6 hardware. Centered on the thinner face is a recessed 25mm x 0.75 threaded ring. On the opposite face is a 45 degree recess for mounting a beam-splitter. There is a cross bore in the larger part of the base which is centered to the optic axis of the beam-splitter.

About the periphery of the mount are several micro-threaded adjustment screws (hex head). These are able to adjust both the leveling and very slightly, the rotation of one part with respect to the other. The threaded ring, although centered within the thinner plate, is actually a part of the main portion of the mount – the only portion that moves is the thinner mounting plate.

This appears to be a custom system but would certainly be useful in a number of optical breadboard setups where extremely fine adjustments have to be accomplished for particularly heavy systems.

  • Periplan 10x O Simple Photo Ocular

    $35.00

This is a fairly simple Leitz Periplan 10x ‘O’ eyepiece. The O-series oculars differed from the normal Periplan 10x in that the field diaphragm is slightly enlarged. These were designed primarily for use in the popular MIKAS photomicrographic attachment used with Leica cameras. The normal Periplan 10x tended to slightly vignette in the corners. Eventually, this ocular became the standard lens supplied with the simpler medical school and laboratory instruments.

The lens is in great condition – coatings appear to be perfect, and no blemished in the glass. The location of the diaphragm in this lens makes it specific to the Leitz 170mm tube length instruments (Leitz switched to the DIN standard 160mm in the 1980’s).

  • Periplan GF 10x M Single Microscope Ocular

    $110.00

This is a single Leitz Periplan GF 10x eyepiece with a focusable eyelens. It is for use in the standard DIN size ocular tube (23.2mm diameter). The diaphragm is located 18mm beneath the end of the flange so it is suitable only for the earlier Leitz instruments with a 170mm mechanical tubelength (Orthoplan / Ortholux 2 era and earlier). It may be used in the later and current stands if an 8mm adapter collar is installed (not included).

The Periplan designation means that the optics have a more highly corrected eyelens. The GF denotes Gross Field, but with a field-of-view index of 18mm it is not as large as the GW series which have a 30mm diameter ocular sleeve. This eyepiece has a focusable eyelens and comes with a threaded reticle retainer ring (reticle diameter is 17.5mm). No reticle is included.

This may be paired either with another focusable ocular, or with a fixed eyelens ocular. It should be noted that Leitz made at least three different height GF 10x oculars (the height of the upper bezel to the sleeve flange). The earliest GF oculars were only about 3mm proud of the ocular tube. The next series were 9mm tall. This ocular (when set to the nominal focus plane indicated by a radial groove) is about 14.5mm tall, which means it is one of the last in the series. When selecting a second Periplan GF 10x eyepiece, make sure to determine that the height is similar – although the magnifications and the field of view of all the oculars are identical, it is very disconcerting to have one eyepiece further away than the other!

The lens is in near mint condition, and the optics are completely free of blemishes.

This is a GW 10x ocular for use in the ‘super-wide-field’ viewing tubes as found in the Leitz Orthoplan and MM-5 and 6 research microscopes. It is the original ‘chimney’ style with the tapered chrome barrels. The ocular is in very fine condition cosmetically, and the glass appears to be free of blemishes. Coatings are strong on all surfaces.

The ocular has a barrel diameter of 30mm and a field-of-view index of 24mm (this is the diameter of the observed object field when using a 1x objective).

  • GW 6.3x Microscope Ocular Single, ( Chimney

    $90.00

This is a GW 6.3x ocular for use in the ‘super-wide-field’ viewing tubes as found in the Leitz Orthoplan and MM-5 and 6 research microscopes. It is the original ‘chimney’ style with the tapered chrome barrels. The ocular was removed from the large projection screen built into an MM-5 research metallograph. As a consequence of its location, it was never touched – the glass is perfect as are the cosmetics. The Locktite that had been used to secure the eye lens in the proper position for screen focus has been removed and new Leitz lubricant applied to the helical threads. For all practical purposes, the lens is in ‘unused’ condition. Focus motion works perfectly.

The ocular has a barrel diameter of 30mm and a field-of-view index of 28mm (this is the diameter of the observed object field when using a 1x objective).

  • a15x Ocular Pair – Only for Stereo Magnifiers

    $100.00

This is a matched pair of a15x oculars. These oculars are ONLY useable in the Leitz series of binocular magnifiers. These magnifiers resembled inverted porro-prism binoculars and were supplied in three variations with fixed magnification objective lenses (0.7x, 1x, and 2x). They are unique in that the diameter of the ocular tube is 31mm (instead of the more common 30mm), and the length of the two ocular tubes differed. The left-hand tube would only accept the ‘fixed’ eyelens ocular, and the right tube the focusing ocular. Consequently, the shoulders on the two types of oculars were in different positions. Oculars were always supplied in pairs with one fixed and one adjustable eyelens.

These magnifiers were first produced in the 1920’s, and production continued in one form or another until around 1980. Around 1970 Leitz changed the tube diameter to the more conventional 30mm, so if you have a very recent magnifier, you should double-check to make sure this ocular will fit! (These are the 31mm version).

To illustrate the difference in the two ocular tubes I have shown a pair of a15x oculars installed in a c. 1950 binocular magnifier. (It is not included in this listing and is not available for purchase).

The lenses are in exceptional condition – just some very light wear in the enamel on the focusing knurls. The glass is in unblemished condition and appears to have a mag-fluoride coating although it is very pale. From the engraving style, I would date these oculars to the late 1950’s.

  • a10x Focusing Ocular – Only for Stereo Magnifiers

    $40.00

This is a single focusing a10x ocular. This ocular will ONLY fit in the right-hand eyepiece tube of the Leitz series of binocular magnifiers. The lens is in very fine condition – just the typical wear in the enamel on the focusing knurl. The lens is in perfect condition although it does appear to predate optical coatings – probably early 1950’s.

  • Periplan GW 8x / 26 High Eyepoint Microscope

    $300.00

This is a rare pair of high-eyepoint focusing GW 8x oculars intended for use in the ultra-wide-field instruments of 170mm mechanical tube length. These include the Leitz Orthoplan (Metalloplan), the MM-5 and MM-6 inverted metallographs, and some other specialized instruments that utilize the 30mm diameter viewing tubes.

These lenses have a field-of-view index of 28mm (the diameter of the observable object field that would seen when using a 1x objective lens). They both include threaded retaining rings for 24mm diameter reticles.

These lenses are in near-perfect condition. The only blemish I could find was a bright spot on one of the focusing knurls. The glass appears to be perfect in all respects. Neither ocular includes the threaded rubber eye guard. This pair sold for $1850 in 1990.

  • 10x / 23 Stereo Microscope Ocular, Single

    $50.00

This 10x Nikon ocular is intended for use in the simpler stereo microscopes. It has a barrel diameter of 30mm. It does not include an eye guard. The ocular is in good cosmetic condition – there is an ‘8’ scribed into the side of the barrel, and the nomenclature shows a bit of wear although still readable. The glass appears to be perfect. Field-of-view index is 20mm – this is the diameter of the object field that is observable when the objective magnification is set to 1x.

This ocular has a 30mm diameter sleeve and may only be employed in the super-wide field viewing tubes. The magnification is 10x, and the field-of-view index is 26.5mm (this is the diameter of the field one would see if using a 1x objective). The ocular is focusable.

The ocular is in near-perfect condition. The glass appears to be blemish-free. This appears to be an earlier version of the CFUW ocular – it does not include an integrated rubber eye guard. The focusing mount is very different from the later versions. I am not sure about compatibility with the later types.
