Modulopak Vertical Illuminator, 1x, Not for

This Leitz modulopak vertical illuminator has the standard 42mm diameter annular dovetail change ring for attaching to the top of microscope stands of the generation that included, most notably, the Ergolux, Secolux, and Laborlux ME and HL. The upper housing includes a 1x infinity corrected tube lens and the mounting ring for the viewing tube. This illuminator must be used with infinity corrected objectives.

The central ‘brick’ contains a fixed Gauss beam-splitter for brightfield work, as well as an annular fully reflecting mirror for darkfield (both are on the same substrate glass so alignment is assured). This modulopak is an earlier version so the Gauss mirror does not have the special dichroic coating that enables the attachment of the laser autofocus system. Above the mirror is a horizontal slot that accepts filter sliders, including analyzers for polarized light applications and interference contrast work (no filters are included). In the base of the housing is an annular condenser lens that is used when the darkfield method is employed. This ring focuses the light to a point somewhat above the objective lens turret where it then opens up into a cone that enters the top of the objective at an angle. This clever adaptation allows the design of darkfield objectives using standard RMS threads but it does mean that the distance of the objective from the illuminator is critical.

The illumination tube includes a recess for 35mm diameter mounted filters as well as a collector and relay lenses and three additional slots. The largest slot accommodates an included ‘V-Slide’ which has a precentered adjustable aperture diaphragm and a centerable adjustable field diaphragm. When the entire slider is moved to the alternate position a special darkfield system is engaged. This moves a central stop into the light path so the annular lens is then illuminated.

The second two slots are for an optional polarizer (for interference contrast applications) and a first order red compensator, also for interference contrast. Neither of these optional components are included – the original blank covers are present, however.

This illuminator (Leitz catalog number 563 486) is in perfect condition. The only marks on it are from a fiber optic adapter that was clamped onto the extension ring at the back of the illuminator. All optics are perfect and all adjustments work properly.

Spectra Physics 581 Dye Laser Etalon

Spectra Physics 581 Dye Laser Etalon in Kinemetric Mount

This etalon system for a dye laser appears to be complete, less the piezo control unit. The etalon has an aperture of approximately one half inch. I am not sure of the wavelength range. Presently the etalon does transmit very nicely in the aqua blue region of the spectrum. The carrier for the etalon appears to be Piezo driven. There is a connection cable for the drive with a standard DIN 6-pin locking connector. There are two mirrors present in the housing.

The entire housing is held in a two-axis kinemetric mounting allowing adjustment of both elevation and azimuth through a range of several degrees either side of normal. The baseplate consists of two parallel plates that have additional adjustments to determine the spacing of the two plates.

Spectra-Physics part number for the etalon is 581. Serial number is 3671 / 160.

Zygo 2002-2 Interferometer Body

This appears to be some sort of interferometer unit for use in a metrology laser distance measurement system. There are two numbers on the part, on one face is 9202, and on the opposite face is 2002-2. There is a fiber optic coupler (FC connector?) on one face, and on the opposite side is a modestly sized aperture. There is a third aperture on one of the two remaining narrow faces.

When looking in the larger aperture the two other apertures are seen side-by-side. This unit lacks the magnetic alignment mirror (present on the other unit we have in stock).

Zygo did manufacture a laser interferometry distance measurement system similar to the well-known Hewlett Packard system, and in fact many components could be directly substituted. This does not appear to be a current product, but dimensionally closely resembles the Compact 1-axis HSPMI Interferometer. It is in superb condition – indeed it looks almost unused.

Zetopan Microscope Parts and Box of Objectives

This is a collection of parts from a Reichert Binolux lamphouse system from a Zetopan research microscope. The Binolux lamphouse was also used with a different mounting system on both the MeF-1 and MeF-2 inverted metallographs. The Binolux consists of two lamphouses – a smaller low voltage tungsten or tungsten-halogen for visual observations in transmitted and incident light, and a larger lamphouse capable of housing either a 150W xenon or 200W mercury lamp.

This assembly is missing the low voltage lamp system, but the entire arc lamp system is present along with the beam-splitter / mirror system for switching between the two lamphouses. The arc lamp housing includes an adjustable collector lens, iris diaphragm, and a swing-out diffusion disk between the collector and the arc lamp position. The system for holding the arc lamp is centerable using two knobs on the side of the lamphouse, and the position may be locked using concentric locking collars. The arc lamp is supported by a swing-aside holder for the base of the lamp – connection to the anode is via a flexible lead. There are two separate conduits for the anode and cathode with bushings and locking strain reliefs. The cables are present but the leads on the interior of the lamphouse have completely corroded. The cables have been removed. It would be possible to install new connectors after shortening the cables by about 10 inches. The strain relief boots remain on the cables.

The lamphouse also contains two five-position filter holders. One holder contains three different neutral density filters and what appears to be a VG-9 green filter. There is also an ‘open’ position. They are all in excellent condition and can easily be exchanged using the retainer springs. The second slider holds a metal disk for beam suppression, what appears to be a pair of BG 3 or BG 12 filters (dense violet blue); a UG-5(?) nearly opaque filter that is cracked; and a light aqua filter which is probably a BG-38 red suppression filter. The last position is a sandwich of two types of heat filter. The ND filter slider would be expected for use with a xenon lamp, but the second slider is obviously intended for UV and near UV fluorescence work.

All of the existing components are in excellent condition with the exception of the leads to the arc lamps. All controls work as they should. The only other issue is the screw for the clamping knob for fixing the Binolux assembly to the rear of the Zetopan has broken. It will be possible to replace this using the existing parts as a pattern. (The screw is fixed to the Binolux lamphouse – the knob and clamp segment with spring thread onto the broken screw).
