D.O. Industries Golden Navitar KE f 3.5 Projection Lens
$250.00
This is a D.O. Industries ‘Golden Navitar’ projection lens with a Kodak Ektagraphic III focusing mount. The Navitar projection lenses are among the finest produced being exceptionally well corrected for flatness of field and for color rendition. They are the equal of most camera lenses as far as optical performance. They are the objective of choice in many conference rooms and lecture halls..
This particular lens is a fixed focal length version at a very short 1.5” with an f-ratio of 2.8. The very wide angle enables one to place the projector in front of the viewing group – a 10 foot wide screen can be filled with the projector a mere 11 feet 6 inches from the screen.
Furthermore, this particular objective is equipped with a perspective correction device. The front lens of the objective can be moved ‘off-axis’ by up to 3.8mm, the direction of the displacement can be set in any direction and locked at the desired position. The perspective correction feature enables one to eliminate the ‘keystone’ effect created by projecting an image onto a screen that isn’t orthogonal to the projector. With a wide-angle lens it would be typical to have the projector located in front of the viewing audience. If it were placed perfectly in front of the screen, the projector would be in the way of some audience members. Placing the projector on a ceiling suspended shelf, or on a low table in front of the audience would create a trapezoidal image on the screen. Offsetting the front lens of the objective helps overcome this disadvantage. The front lens if marked with a white ring so the amount of offset may be visually checked. This is the same principal used for perspective correcting SLR lenses when photographing tall buildings or architecture from ground level – without perspective correction, the buildings appear to lean away from the viewer.
The wide projection angle places rigorous requirements on the design of the objective so it will remain evenly bright from corner to corner, perfectly sharp, and free of distortions. In addition, all Navitar fixed focus objectives are guaranteed to be within 1% of the stated focal length – it is very easy to match projectors for lap dissolve setups.
The lens is in perfect optical condition. The anodizing on some lenses does show a bit of minor fading here and there, but they basically look great. This was one of the most expensive lenses in the Golden Navitar series – it listed for over $1100 in the mid-1990’s.
