American Optical Series 10 Microscope with DIC Epi Illumination & Triocular Tube

Original price was: $599.00.Current price is: $495.00.

American Optical (AO) Series 10 Microscope with DIC Epi-Illumination and Trinocular Tube….

Classic American Optical Series 10 that is equipped with the very scarce incident light Nomarski interference contrast equipment. The stand includes the special vertical illuminator with the filter turret that contains an analyzer, daylight blue filter, diffusion disk, and dense green filter. A lever on the illumination tube flips in a polarizer that is properly oriented with respect to the analyzer in the turret. The illuminator is provided with fully adjustable field and aperture diaphragms and a tungsten lamp with continuously regulating transformer.

The nosepiece of the microscope is a special version that holds sliders with Wollaston prisms matched to the various objectives. Please note that only the slider for the 20x objective is included the others were not present. The Wollaston prism slide contains a long wedge Wollaston and an open position for normal observations in bright field (or crossed polarized light). When the prism is engaged, a graduated knob on the opposite side of the slide moves the prism so that the background color may be selected. The prism travel goes from a first-order red one side of the extinction position to just shy of the second order red on the opposite side. While the prism is intended for use with the special infinity strain-free optics, the single objective that was installed on this instrument was a Nikon U20. This is a special strain-free optic that was designed for use with the Nikon universal rotating stage after Federow. It is not parfocal with the American Optical objectives, but since it is the only one installed, that isn’t an issue. Surprisingly, the image it yields is exceptionally flat, and the Wollaston prism works perfectly with the lens. Extinction is uniform across the entire field when the prism is set at the zero order (black background). The oculars are Bausch & Lomb 10x wide-field high-eyepoint, type 31-15-71..

The viewing head is a trinocular type with a port for a photo tube. It includes the photo tube eyepiece adapter, an American Optical 15x ocular, and a rubber light excluding collar for use with independently mounted camera systems.

The XY mechanical stage includes a standard slide holder arrangement. The stage is ungraduated. Its height may quickly be adjusted through a large range and clamped using a lever on the side of the stage. The stage remains stationary during specimen focusing only the nosepiece with the objectives and Nomarski prism move.

No transmitted light equipment is supplied. The condenser fork and the pinion drive for focusing the condenser have both been removed from the substage.

The entire microscope has been completely rebuilt and is in near-perfect condition. Optically, everything is perfect no blemishes in any of the elements and everything is aligned. Cosmetically, there are a few minor scratches in surface of the stage, but the rest of the instrument is in exceptional condition.

NOTE: Shown with lamp socket – socket is missing presently.,

  • 0.75x Auxiliary Lens for SSZ Stereo Microscopes

    $50.00

This is an older version of the 0.75x auxiliary objective for the Scienscope SSZ stereo microscope. It has two relieved rings turned into the periphery of the mount to facilitate mounting of ring-light accessories. The mount has a 48mm diameter thread which will fit a number of instruments, including several from other manufacturers.

The glass is in excellent condition (almost perfect), but the mount does show some evidence of use. The attachment threads are unblemished it threads easily into the bottom of the microscope.

  • Small Nikon Pillar Stand with Rack & Pinion Adjustments

    $275.00

This is a Small Nikon Pillar Stand with Rack & Pinion Adjustments.

This is an elegant compact pillar stand that appears to have been manufactured by Nikon, although the Nikon logo or name does not appear anywhere on the stand itself only on the focus drive. The stand weighs just shy of 30 pounds with a 10 inch diameter base.

The vertical pillar is 11 inches tall and 28mm in diameter (overall height with the base is 13 inches). With the clamping support ring and the cross-bar holder installed, the total available vertical excursion is 7 inches.

The horizontal boom has a travel of approximately 4 inches via the cross block, which is keyed to prevent the boom from rotating. There is an additional 2 inches of rack & pinion motion at the end of the boom. Attached to the boom is a post with adjustable inclination. The post is 24.45mm in diameter and 77.5mm long not including the threaded cap at the bottom of the post.

On the underside of the rack & pinion mechanism are two threaded bores, both of which are empty. It appears that one would have held a clamping knob for the boom extension, and the other would have served as a guide pin for a channel in the bottom of the extension. Presently the boom is free to tip slightly from side-to-side, although the rack prevents further motion.

The focusing yoke is of more recent construction. It uses a dovetailed rack & pinion motion with a total travel of 40mm. The inside diameter of the yoke is 62mm. It is branded Nikon.

Overall condition of the stand is excellent. All the motions work very well with the exception of the missing guide screw and clamp screw mentioned above. There are department asset identifications etched into the pillar base and the cross block, as well as the focus drive, but they are neatly done (see photos).

  • Diagnostic Instruments Boom Stand with Very

    $450.00

This is a special version of the Diagnostic Instruments copy of the Bausch & Lomb ‘S-stand’. The typical 10 inch square iron base has been replaced with a plate of aluminum 24 inches square and half and inch thick. All the upper edges and corners are generously radiused. The plate has been repainted with a black enamel. The original finish was not completely removed before repainting so the resulting finish has some extra relief to it, but it is decent in appearance.

The main pillar is 24 inches tall and 1.471 inches in diameter. It includes a stop ring for supporting the cross bar block. Both the stop ring and the block are 2 inches tall so the total vertical excursion range is 20 inches.

The boom is 19 inches long and likewise, 1.471 inches in diameter. It terminates in a holder for pin-type focus drives. Total excursion of the boom is 16 inches. There is a channel on the side of the boom that the clamp screw rides in, thus preventing the boom from rotating during adjustment.

All motions work very smoothly. Diagnostic Instruments use special plastic guide bushings within the clamping block allowing very tight tolerances while preserving the sliding finish of the components.

  • Diagnostic Instruments Boom Stand with Very

    $400.00

This is a special version of the Diagnostic Instruments copy of the Bausch & Lomb ‘S-stand’. The typical 10 inch square iron base has been replaced with a plate of aluminum 24 inches square and half and inch thick. All the upper edges and corners are generously radiused. The white painted finish shows evidence of much abuse, but the actual plate itself appears to be undamaged. It would be a simple matter to refinish the base but we will leave that up to the purchaser.

The main pillar is 24 inches tall and 1.471 inches in diameter. It includes a stop ring for supporting the cross bar block. Both the stop ring and the block are 2 inches tall so the total vertical excursion range is 20 inches.

  • Diagnostic Instruments Heavy Laminated Base

    $360.00

This unusual boom stand has a very thick (1.5 inch) laminated base with a steel plate inset on the under side for extreme rigidity and sustantial heft. The base is 20 inches deep and 17 inches in width. One of the feet is adjustable. The steel column is 36 inches tall and 1.312 inches in diameter. Although hollow for reduced weight, it is nonetheless very rigid.

The column includes an adjustable stop ring for supporting the outrigger boom. The boom consists of several parts. The primary section that rides on the vertical column has a four inch horizontal extension with a bore 0.875 inches in diameter. Into this is fitted an extension arm. The arm has a pin on either end 3.375 inches in length, one of which is fastened to the primary section and the other forming the terminus of the extension. The extension (without the pins) is 6.75 inches long. Interposed between the extension and the primary section is a long bar with several clamping positions (see third photo).

Condition of the stand is near-perfect just a slight bit of wear in evidence on the clamping bar.

  • Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom 3 Pod, 1x to

    $75.00

This is the entry-level version of the classic Bausch & Lomb stereo zoom microscope Pod. It has a zoom range of 1x to 2x (later StereoZoom 3 pods increased the zoom range to 2.5x). Magnification can be further varied by exchanging the oculars (B&L has eyepiece pairs from 10x to 33x designed for use with the stereo pods), or by threading an auxiliary objective adapter onto the front of the pod. The later are available in various magnifications from 0.3x to 2x, but they alter the working distance of the pod. This yields a magnification range of 3x to 160x depending on the combination of oculars and auxiliary lenses selected.

This pod is in excellent cosmetic condition and exceptional optical/mechanical condition. It represents the earliest generation instruments with all metal construction and gray finish. The dust seals beneath the ocular tubes are no longer present (the earlier seals tended to dry out and crumble away). Alignment is very good. These will be checked for proper zoom function and relubricated when warranted before they are posted. The lubricants on older pods tend to become rather tacky and the result is an image jump during zooming. Replacing the lubricant on the zoom cams and the guide ledges will correct this issue.

Pod catalog number is 31-26-93. With standard 10x oculars (not included) the field diameter ranges from 20mm at 1x to 10mm at 2x, with a working distance of 100mm. Instrument remains in focus throughout the zoom range.

To make a complete instrument you need a focusing yoke (included with some of the simpler stand versions), a support stand, and a pair of oculars. Optional needs would include an illumination source. Inquire regarding the availability of complete systems or multiple units.

  • Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom 4 Pod 0.7x 3x

    $90.00

These are nice examples of the Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom 4 microscope pod that started it all. Being of the gray color, this represents the first generation of the instrument. It was introduced in the mid-1950s and remained in production for over 50 years with very little change.

This was by far the most popular of the StereoZoom series, with a zoom range of 0.7x to 3x Magnification can be further varied by exchanging the oculars (B&L has eyepiece pairs from 10x to 33x designed for use with the stereo pod), or by threading an auxiliary objective adapter onto the front of the pod. The later are available in various magnifications from 0.3x to 2x, but they alter the working distance of the pod. This yields a magnification range of 2.1x to 180x depending on the combination of oculars and auxiliary lenses selected.

The pods are in excellent cosmetic condition and fine optical/mechanical condition. The dust seals beneath the ocular tubes are no longer present (the earlier seals tended to dry out and crumble away). Alignment is checked and verified. The gray pods are more difficult to clean than the later generation instruments because the dust glass under the ocular tube can only be reached after complete disassembly of the pod (in later units the dust glass was easily removed for cleaning). These glasses tend to collect a film of outgassing from the lubricants used in the zoom mechanism, and in serious cases can render the pod close to useless. Internal surfaces of the dust glasses and the front objectives are cleaned (photo of pod base was taken before cleaning objectives). Zoom mechanism is relubricated to prevent image shift during zooming

Pod catalog number is 31-26-94. With standard 10x oculars (not included) the field diameter ranges from 28mm at 0.7x to 6.6mm at 3x, with a working distance of 100mm. Instrument remains in focus throughout the zoom range.

To make a complete instrument you need a focusing yoke (included with some of the simpler stand versions), a support stand, and a pair of oculars. Optional needs would include an illumination source. Inquire regarding the availability of complete systems or multiple units.
