  • S 10x Stereo Microscope Ocular, Single

    $65.00

This appears to be an older version of a Nikon stereo microscope ocular, probably intended for use with their better series of instruments. It is engraved ‘S10x’, and has a 30mm diameter chrome barrel. It appears that there was a retractable eye guard at one point but it is no longer present (there are external threads on the upper portion of the barrel)

The glass is in excellent condition. This listing only includes the single ocular.

  • CFW 10x Wide-Field High-Eyepoint Focusing

    $60.00

This is an excellent Nikon ocular. It is 23.2 mm in diameter and is meant for use with compound microscopes. The model designation is CFW 10x. The ocular is focusable, and has a very high eyepoint for glasses wearers.

The CF designation means it is ‘chrome free – there is no ‘color ring’ about the edge of the field of view as seen in some manufacturer’s oculars where some of the corrections are manifested in the objective and the remainder in the eyepiece. The ‘chrome free’ optics correct for optimal color definition in both the eyepieces and objectives. The W denotes ‘wide field’.

This ocular is in fair cosmetic condition. It is missing the rubber eye guard, and a small bit of the plastic flange that retains the eye guard is missing. There are also some minor blemishes in the knurling and the barrel is scored from a clamp screw (see photos). Most importantly, the optical elements are in perfect condition.

  • Modulopak Vertical Illuminator, 1x, Not for

    $335.00

This Leitz modulopak vertical illuminator has the standard 42mm diameter annular dovetail change ring for attaching to the top of microscope stands of the generation that included, most notably, the Ergolux, Secolux, and Laborlux ME and HL. The upper housing includes a 1x infinity corrected tube lens and the mounting ring for the viewing tube. This illuminator must be used with infinity corrected objectives.

The central ‘brick’ contains a fixed Gauss beam-splitter for brightfield work, as well as an annular fully reflecting mirror for darkfield (both are on the same substrate glass so alignment is assured). This modulopak is an earlier version so the Gauss mirror does not have the special dichroic coating that enables the attachment of the laser autofocus system. Above the mirror is a horizontal slot that accepts filter sliders, including analyzers for polarized light applications and interference contrast work (no filters are included). In the base of the housing is an annular condenser lens that is used when the darkfield method is employed. This ring focuses the light to a point somewhat above the objective lens turret where it then opens up into a cone that enters the top of the objective at an angle. This clever adaptation allows the design of darkfield objectives using standard RMS threads but it does mean that the distance of the objective from the illuminator is critical.

The illumination tube includes a recess for 35mm diameter mounted filters as well as a collector and relay lenses and three additional slots. The largest slot accommodates an included ‘V-Slide’ which has a precentered adjustable aperture diaphragm and a centerable adjustable field diaphragm. When the entire slider is moved to the alternate position a special darkfield system is engaged. This moves a central stop into the light path so the annular lens is then illuminated.

The second two slots are for an optional polarizer (for interference contrast applications) and a first order red compensator, also for interference contrast. Neither of these optional components are included – the original blank covers are present, however.

This illuminator (Leitz catalog number 563 486) is in perfect condition. The only marks on it are from a fiber optic adapter that was clamped onto the extension ring at the back of the illuminator. All optics are perfect and all adjustments work properly.

  • Photometric Microscope Objective, 10x / 0.25

    $80.00

This is a rather unusual optic manufactured by Gamma Scientific. It came in a small plastic capsule with the label as shown in the third photo. (The capsule had urethane lining which had deteriorated beyond recovery and had to be discarded – hence the stains on the label which was inside the capsule).

It appears to be a standard type of 10x microscope objective of the shorter adjustment length (37mm). The shroud that would have carried the nomenclature has been replaced with a special shroud that has a pinhole and is optically deadened with a flat black finish.

It is identified as a ‘photometry objective’ which would explain the black shroud. The pinhole is located at the focal plane of the objective which indicates this was focused on an aerial image. The pinhole very accurately defines an absolute area for light integration.

The objective is in excellent condition.

  • Motorized Quintuple Microscope Nosepiece

    $425.00

This nosepiece will fit the Olympus BH2-MJLT and the BH2-MJL series of metallurgical / semiconductor inspection microscopes. It accepts five objectives with standard RMS type threads. It is not suitable for use with the NEO brightfield / darkfield objectives which have a substantially larger thread diameter.

The dovetail carrier for the nosepiece has an integral connector for the motor drive. The nosepiece is in very fine condition – a few minor scuff marks on the upper corners are the only flaws. The nosepiece is missing the clamp screw for the tube.

  • Stereo Microscope 0.5x Auxiliary Lens (48 mm

    $75.00

This is a well-made auxiliary lens for a stereo microscope. The magnification factor is 0.5x. Unfortunately, there is no manufacturer’s mark on the lens cell. The thread diameter is 48 mm, and the outer diameter is 50 mm. The overall height of the cell (less the mounting thread) is 21.5 mm. The clear aperture of the optic is approximately 40 mm. There is another 48 mm female thread on the distal end of the assembly.

The lens does have a working distance of 177 mm printed beneath the magnification factor which might help narrow it down to the correct manufacturer. This thread will fit several common stereo microscopes, including the Nikon SMZ-1(B), and the Olympus SZ series, but I am fairly certain it is not manufactured by either of those companies as it would have been so indicated.

The lens is coated, and the coating is very strong. The cell is in very fine condition – just the slightest of scuff marks in the matte finish – hardly noticeable.

  • Plummer Side-Viewing Microscope with Focusing Platform

    $250.00

Plummer Precision Optics was principally a manufacturer of custom systems, mainly for Department of Defense. This interesting microscope has no identification number on it – indeed no indication of the magnification of either the ocular or the objective. The ocular is a focusable type found on many collimation systems, but there is no reticle installed, nor even a defining aperture diaphragm. The objective is installed at a right angle to the tube assembly..

The tube assembly is cradled in a holder that has a side-to-side drive mechanism which effectively focuses the microscope (motion is imparted parallel to the objective axis). Opposite the control knob for the focus drive is a plate that carries a second very large clamp screw and washer. This was either used to mount the entire assembly on a fixture to the subject could be examined, or was used to mount the actual sample. I suspect the former since the working distance of the objective appears to be about 35mm – well beyond the plane of the focusing plate.

This is a very nicely machined instrument and seems to be in close to new condition. The optics are perfect

  • Auxiliary Lens for M-Series Stereo

    $140.00

This auxiliary lens fits the Unitron series M stereo microscope objectives. The inside diameter of the mount is XXX mm. It appears that the mount may be missing an internal clamp ring. There is a shallow recess where such a ring might have been held captive (these rings are typically used to preserve the finish of the objective by protecting it from direct contact with the ends of the clamping screws). The auxiliary lens does mount very securely, even without this ring.

The glass itself is in virtually perfect condition. I could not see any flaws in the finish on either outer surface, and the cement layer shows no voids. The black anodize ring does show a bit of fading. This lens will halve the magnification indicated on the microscope while greatly increasing the working distance.

  • Zetopan Microscope Parts and Box of Objectives

    $300.00

This is a collection of parts from a Reichert Binolux lamphouse system from a Zetopan research microscope. The Binolux lamphouse was also used with a different mounting system on both the MeF-1 and MeF-2 inverted metallographs. The Binolux consists of two lamphouses – a smaller low voltage tungsten or tungsten-halogen for visual observations in transmitted and incident light, and a larger lamphouse capable of housing either a 150W xenon or 200W mercury lamp.

This assembly is missing the low voltage lamp system, but the entire arc lamp system is present along with the beam-splitter / mirror system for switching between the two lamphouses. The arc lamp housing includes an adjustable collector lens, iris diaphragm, and a swing-out diffusion disk between the collector and the arc lamp position. The system for holding the arc lamp is centerable using two knobs on the side of the lamphouse, and the position may be locked using concentric locking collars. The arc lamp is supported by a swing-aside holder for the base of the lamp – connection to the anode is via a flexible lead. There are two separate conduits for the anode and cathode with bushings and locking strain reliefs. The cables are present but the leads on the interior of the lamphouse have completely corroded. The cables have been removed. It would be possible to install new connectors after shortening the cables by about 10 inches. The strain relief boots remain on the cables.

The lamphouse also contains two five-position filter holders. One holder contains three different neutral density filters and what appears to be a VG-9 green filter. There is also an ‘open’ position. They are all in excellent condition and can easily be exchanged using the retainer springs. The second slider holds a metal disk for beam suppression, what appears to be a pair of BG 3 or BG 12 filters (dense violet blue); a UG-5(?) nearly opaque filter that is cracked; and a light aqua filter which is probably a BG-38 red suppression filter. The last position is a sandwich of two types of heat filter. The ND filter slider would be expected for use with a xenon lamp, but the second slider is obviously intended for UV and near UV fluorescence work.

All of the existing components are in excellent condition with the exception of the leads to the arc lamps. All controls work as they should. The only other issue is the screw for the clamping knob for fixing the Binolux assembly to the rear of the Zetopan has broken. It will be possible to replace this using the existing parts as a pattern. (The screw is fixed to the Binolux lamphouse – the knob and clamp segment with spring thread onto the broken screw).

  • Gaertner Rotary Right-angle Adapter for Micrometer

    $220.00

This is an unusual accessory for the Gaertner precision measuring slides. It consists of a rotary flange which can be installed in the threaded bush of the microscope carrier in place of the microscope. Once the bushing is installed, the angle bracket is fitted into the bushing and secured with a wingnut from beneath the slide carriage. The tension on the joint may be regulated by the wing nut.

The angle bracket has a large threaded bushing perpendicular to the plane of the slide. The internal thread of this bushing is identical to that used on the carriage slider, allowing instruments to be mounted at right-angles to the plane of motion. The direction of the instrument may be selected by rotating the entire bracket, and the orientation of the installed instrument may be adjusted by turning the bushing. There is a locking screw to clamp the bushing in the desired position.

I have not seen this accessory illustrated in any of the literature, but it is very well made. Please note that the precision cross-slide shown in the photos is not included. We have many suitable cross-slides available.

  • Erecting Prism Adapter, 60 Degree, for 23.2mm

    $275.00

With the addition of the erecting prism adapter, the normally inverted image produced by the standard Gaertner measuring microscopes is ‘re-inverted’ by use of a special roof prism. The M193 adapter also inclines the ocular at an angle of 60 degrees. The Gaertner catalog number is M193.

The adapter also increases the effective optical tube length of the microscope 26mm. The effect of this increase is to slightly increase the magnification while slightly decreasing the working distance and the field of view. The adapter replaces the standard eyepiece tube adapter.

This adapter has been specially modified so it will accept standard diameter eyepieces (23.2mm) instead of the smaller 49.64thh inch as normally supplied with Gaertner instruments. There is no cross line installed in the adapter. The sleeve is chrome plated, and has a clamp screw to secure the eyepiece.

  • Gaertner 14x Ramsden Ocular Adapter with Glass

    $40.00

This is a type M250-240 eyepiece adapter for use in Gaertner measuring microscopes. It is a bit shorter than the normal adapter because it is exclusively used with the shorter focal length M240 14x Ramsden ocular (not included).

Unlike the typical adapter with a 90 degree spider cross line installed, this adapter has the type M204S glass scale. This disk has a 10mm long scale graduated in 0.1mm increments, numbered every 10th line. There is also a cross line indicating the center of the field of view.

The sleeve is in excellent condition, but the glass scale is quite dirty. It also appears that some of the pigment used to fill the engraved lines has been rinsed away – the lines are not uniformly dark. For that reason this is priced as would be an empty adapter tube – a new reticle may be installed at the user’s discretion.

  • American Optical 52S Pillar Stand for

    $150.00

The American Optical Model 52S pillar stand is for large opaque specimens. It must be used with a focusing yoke, type 562, when the stand is combined with the StereoStar series of microscopes. When used with the Series 55 Cycloptic stereo microscopes, the focus drive with mounting pin is a part of the microscope body.

The base is very heavy (about 40 pounds) and of large dimensions (10 inches by 10.5 inches, and 1.5 inches tall). The pillar includes a stop ring clamp that allows the boom to rotate 360 degrees. Vertical excursion ranges from 3.25 to 14 inches (center of boom to table surface). Horizontal excursion ranges from 3.375 to 16.5 inches (center of pillar to center of pin bore).

Unique clamping arrangement allows securing both the vertical and horizontal motions with a single knob. Square boom construction prevents accidental tipping of the microscope about the axis of the boom.

The stands are in excellent condition with some signs of use. Stands do not include a focusing yoke, Model 562, which must be added if one is using a StereoStar type pod.
