  • HL 50x / 0.65 BF / DF Metallurgical Microscope

    $100.00

This Leitz objective is meant for use with the Modulopak vertical illuminators as found on Leitz microscopes of the 1980s such as the Ergolux, as well as earlier stands equipped with the dark field vertical illuminator that could be interposed between the limb of the stand and the viewing tube. Even though these objectives are fitted with a standard RMS thread, they are able to take advantage of darkfield capability using a very novel means for illumination. The vertical illuminators (such as the modulopak) are fitted with an annular collector lens in the lower dovetail mount. The darkfield illumination, when selected, passes through this lens which focuses it to a point somewhere between the objective and the bottom of the illuminator. After passing this focal point, the hollow cone of light then expands whereupon it enters the periphery of the objective. Annular collector lenses in the objective then direct the light to a mirror element at the end of the lens which focuses the light onto the sample. The flared body of the objective allows the lenses to be threaded into fairly compact RMS nosepieces.

This particular objective is engraved HL 50x / 0.65 DF. It is an infinity corrected objective, and must be used without any coverslip. The HL designation indicates the lens is corrected for flatness of field when using standard diameter 23.2mm oculars with a field-of-view index of 18mm or less, and is of normal achromatic color correction. The objective is not spring-loaded so it must be used with care. Working distance is less than 0.5mm, but otherwise unknown.

    Magnification 50x
    Numerical aperture 0.65
    Achromatic color correction
Nominally flat field-of-view for normal 18mm index oculars
    Standard RMS thread
Dark field capable must be used with Modulopak vertical illuminators for dark field
    Infinity corrected
Cover glass correction MUST be used without cover-glass

Leitz catalog number for this objective is 569 190. Cosmetically, the objective is in very fine condition, near mint. However, there is a small scratch on the front element (see third photo). The scratch is not imaged in the field-of-view, however, it may very slightly reduce contrast when looking at some specimens.

  • W 8x Microscope Ocular Pair, Exc

    $78.00

This is an excellent condition pair of 8x microscope oculars from the Japanese manufacturer Unitron. They are engraved ‘W 8x’ and feature a wide field of view with a relatively high eyepoint. They fit the normal 23.2mm diameter eyepiece tubes. The upper eyelenses are fixed and these are not designed to accept micrometer reticles. It should be noted that Unitron microscope oculars are not suitable for use with their telescopes.

The eyepieces are in excellent condition there is very little wear to the black lacquer of the front bezels. One of the oculars has some abrasions to the chrome tube (see photo). The glass is in perfect condition and has MgFl coatings.

  • Unitron Microscope Eyepieces Lot of 6

    $120.00

Unitron Microscope Eyepieces Lot of 6.

This is an interesting assortment of vintage Unitron microscope oculars. There are six oculars in total, including two paired and two single magnification lenses. Both of the paired oculars have focusing eyelenses, while the two ‘singles’ have fixed upper elements.

    The oculars include:

Paired R 5x lenses, marked ‘Bi’. While these do have focusing eyelenses, they do not appear to accept reticles. They are very long (see photo).

Paired Ke 10x ‘Micrometer’ eyepieces with focusing eyelenses. Both oculars include a carrier for reticles, and there is a micrometer plate numbered ‘0’ to ’10’ and divided into 100 parts installed in one of the carriers. The other carrier is empty.

Ke 15x single ocular, also marked ‘Bi’.

K 20x single ocular, also marked ‘Bi’.

All of the eyepieces are of the standard 23.2mm diameter. None are high-eyepoint, nor do they have coated lens elements. The glass is excellent in all of the eyepieces. The chrome is in very decent shape in all except the 20x, which shows some brassing. The black paint on the bezels shows wear on all of the lenses, although not significant. The Ke 15x has obviously been dropped the lip of the front bezel is turned down in a couple of places (see fourth photo). These optics probably date from the early 1960’s.

  • Microscope Stage, 4.25 x 4.25 on Carrier for Leitz

    $225.00

This is a Semprex large-travel microscope stage that has been adapted to a stage carrier for a Leitz Orthoplan (or Ortholux 2) microscope. The stage features an excursion range of 4.25 inches in both the X and Y directions (ungraduated). The entire top plate moves so the sample does not ride back and forth on the upper plate. The stage has a glass insert so it may be used with transmitted light applications throughout the range of motion. The glass plate is about 2.5mm thick, so the substage condenser should have at least a 4mm working distance upper element (the L4 type 005 element as used with the type 600 condenser base). The stage carrier has a dovetail to accept a condenser carrier, but neither the condenser carrier or condenser are included.

The Semprex stage features a very innovative drive system. There are no rack & pinion assemblies. Instead, each axis is supplied with a tapered blade. The drive knobs have a pair of compression washers that engage the edge of the blade. The drives are completely free of backlash and there is absolutely no lost motion in the knobs. It is a very elegant system.

The stage appears virtually unused. The upper surface is unblemished. The glass is completely unmarked

  • Epiplan 40 / 0.60 Pol Short-Mount Microscope

    $225.00

This is a very nice Zeiss LD Epiplan 40 POL objective for work in reflected polarized light. Because it is strainfree, it is suitable for use with the Nomarski interference contrast method (requires the addition of an INKO LD 40 attachment, not included). The objective has a numerical aperture of 0.60. By selection of suitable cover shrouds, the coverglass correction of the objective can be altered from D=0 (no coverglass) to D=1.5 mm. The shroud included with this objective has no glass element, therefore the objective is presently corrected for imaging through a 1.5mm thickness of glass. This would be suitable for looking at semi-conductor mask geometries with the substrate side toward the objective.

Working distance with D=1.5 shroud installed is 3.4 mm. The objective has an adjustment length of 22 mm. This series is intended to be used with some sort of extension collar. When threaded into the centerable change rings, they are suitable for use with the type IIC vertical illuminator (corrected for an adjustment length of 33 mm). When used on a 45mm type turret nosepiece, they should be installed with an 23 mm spacer ring in order to increase their adjustment length to 45mm. Similarly, if they are used on a reflected light turret corrected for 33 mm, an 11 mm spacer should be introduced.

The objective is in superb cosmetic condition the nomenclature is very strong without any wear. The front element does have two very fine hairline scratches in the coating (see last photo), but they are very insignificant and should not adversely affect performance. However, the price has been adjusted accordingly.

  • PL Fluotar 32x / 0.75 Metallurgical Microscope

    $1,100.00

This is a spectacular condition Leitz (engraved ‘LEICA GERMANY’) semi-conductor microscope objective. It is a Plan 32x, infinity corrected optic, and must be used only on uncovered specimens. The objective is spring-loaded for protection of the front lens.

The lens has a relatively high numerical aperture of 0.75, and is highly corrected for flatness of field up to a 28mm field-of-view index, as well as very high color correction. The Fluotars are bested only by the Apochromats. The lens mounting thread is standard RMS which makes this lens suitable for earlier instruments such as the Ergolux, Metalloplan, and others which used RMS nosepieces. It may be used on more recent 32mm thread instruments via a type 562 281 adapter ring (not included).

Nomenclature is on an engraved ring which may be rotated on the objective for optimal visibility when installed on a nosepiece. Leitz part number of the objective is 567 052. It was specifically manufactured for KLA inspection stations, and there is a KLA serial number engraved on the side of the objective (596).

The lens is in superb condition – no marks of any sort on the glass, and the barrel is free of blemishes. This listed at close to $4500 in the 1996 Leica Master Price List.

  • 6.3x Ocular Pair for Stereo Microscope, 34mm

    $150.00

This is a very unusual pair of Zeiss stereo microscope oculars. I am not sure what instrument they are to be used with, but at 34mm, the diameter of the barrel is much larger than the ‘normal’ 30mm wide-field stereo microscope ocular. The magnification is 6.3x and they appear to be relatively high eyepoint.

The glass is in very fine condition no scratches or delamination, but the lenses are definitely uncoated. The upper bezel does show some modest wear in the black lacquer (see photos). The rest of the ocular housing is in near-mint condition.

These are marked ‘Carl Zeiss Jena’ Germany. It is most likely these are pre-war since the Jena factory started marking their optics ‘aus Jena’ shortly after the end of the war.

  • Photo Changer Tubehead for Microscopes

    $199.88

    Photo C.hanger Tubehead for Microscopes
This is a photo-changer module for attachment to research microscopes. It has a single ‘input’ port and three exit ports. There is a three-position prism slider that may also be rotated through 90 degrees. Using the combination of six possible positions the light is directed in one of five separate manners to the exit port (the third prism slider position has the same result in both rotation positions).

The photo-changer requires the use of special relay lenses one type is used for the input position where the device is attached to the microscope, and another type is used for each of the three exit ports. The input relay lens and the output relay opposite it are in perfect condition. The two ‘side-mounted’ relay lenses both exhibit some marginal delamination, one side a bit more than the other. However, if video or smaller size CCD cameras are mounted on these ports the image acquisition area will be well within the good portion of the relay lenses since only the center portion of the image is acquired.

The changer is in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition all parts work smoothly and effortlessly. All clamp screws are present.
