The large thread size accommodates the darkfield illumination annular optics. This objective will only work on the more recent Leitz (and Leica Microsystems) microscopes that have 32mm diameter thread positions on the nosepiece. These include the DMR series instruments, the DM4000 through DM6000 instruments, as well as the earlier Leitz Ergoplan microscope.

The objective is in near-perfect condition, and the glass is flawless.
