Product Description
Bio-Rad CHEF Mapper® System – Power/Control Module, Variable Speed Pump, and Cooling Module for Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis
This used Bio-Rad CHEF Mapper system bundle includes three essential components for pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE): the 801BR Power/Control Module, the Variable Speed Pump, and the 420-0090 Cooling Module. Together, these components form the core of a complete PFGE system for separating large DNA molecules .
The CHEF Mapper system is based on CHEF (Clamped Homogeneous Electric Fields) technology, which provides highly uniform electric fields within the gel using an array of 24 electrodes . The system can effectively resolve DNA fragments ranging from 100 base pairs to over 10 megabases, making it suitable for applications including electrophoretic karyotyping, YAC analysis, bacterial strain typing, and mammalian DNA analysis .
Component 1: CHEF Mapper® 801BR Power/Control Module
The Power/Control Module contains the electronics for pulsed field electrophoresis, including a 350 V power supply, switching functions, and drivers for the 24 electrodes . The front panel features a two-line fluorescent display, buttons, switches, and jacks for program entry and system control .

-
Powers on – verified
-
Variable speed operation works – verified
Component 3: Bio-Rad Cooling Module 420-0090
The Cooling Module is a stand-alone, portable refrigerated apparatus designed to maintain a constant buffer temperature during electrophoresis runs . Buffer is circulated from the electrophoresis chamber by the variable speed pump, cooled directly by liquid refrigerant in a heat exchanger, and returned to the chamber .
Specifications:
-
Temperature Range: 5-25°C
-
Total Buffer Capacity: 2.2 L
-
Flow Rate: 1.0 L/min
-
Maximum Cooling Capacity: 75 Watts (255 BTU) at 14°C
The Cooling Module maintains buffer temperature typically within 1°C of the set temperature (after stabilization) for a total buffer capacity of 2.2 liters at a flow rate of 1.0 liter/minute . The heat exchanger is electrically isolated from the chassis, compressor, and plumbing to eliminate electrical shock hazard.
Condition:
-
Very good condition
-
Small case crack near A.C. input (see gallery image) – cosmetic only
-
Inlet and outlet connections have original protection covers and appear clean/never connected
-
Unit powers on and appears to function correctly – verified
System Integration
When configured as a complete system, these three components are interconnected as follows :
-
Buffer flows from the electrophoresis chamber to the Cooling Module (“FLOW IN” port)
-
Buffer flows from the Cooling Module (“FLOW OUT” port) to the variable speed pump
-
Buffer returns from the pump to the electrophoresis chamber
The recommended configuration places the Cooling Module between the chamber and the pump to prevent potential blockage issues from frozen buffer .
Applications
The CHEF Mapper system is ideal for a wide range of pulsed field electrophoresis applications :
-
Electrophoretic karyotyping – Separating whole chromosomes of yeast, bacteria, and parasites
-
YAC analysis – Sizing yeast artificial chromosome inserts
-
Bacterial strain typing – PFGE for molecular epidemiology and outbreak investigation
-
Mammalian DNA analysis – Large restriction fragment mapping
-
DNA damage and repair studies
-
Top-down genomic mapping
-
Analysis of tumor cell DNA rearrangements
Important Compatibility Note
The Cooling Module (420-0090) and Variable Speed Pump are designed to work with the CHEF Mapper power module as a complete system. These components are also compatible with Bio-Rad’s CHEF-DR II, CHEF-DR III, and GenePath pulsed field instruments .
The complete CHEF Mapper XA system (catalog number 1703670) includes the cooling module, pump, tubing, DNA size standard, and agarose . This listing includes the core electronic and cooling components.
