Product Description
ATA Sensors ARS-12A MHD Angular Rate Sensor – Precision Inertial Sensor for Stabilization and Pointing Applications
This used ATA Sensors ARS-12A is a high-performance inertial angular rate sensor based on Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) technology. ATA Sensors, formerly the commercial division of Applied Technology Associates, developed this sensor to provide exceptional wideband angular motion measurement capabilities.
According to SBIR documentation from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Model ARS-12 was recognized as an innovative product possessing the appropriate size, bandwidth, measurement noise, dynamic range, ruggedness, and cost characteristics desired for aircraft optical reference applications . The ARS-12 series was developed in support of U.S. Air Force requirements for a small, inexpensive inertial attitude reference system that functions as a two-axis optical reference in high-performance aircraft .

About MHD Sensor Technology
MHD angular rate sensors offer distinct advantages over traditional rate gyroscopes :
-
Wide Bandwidth: Capable of measuring high-frequency angular motion from 1Hz to 1,000Hz
-
Low Noise: Exceptional sensitivity (<25 nanoradians) for precision stabilization
-
No Moving Parts: Solid-state design for high reliability
-
Rugged Construction: Withstands 1,000g shock, -60°C to +85°C temperature range
-
Space Qualified: Proven performance in aerospace environments
The ARS-12 was specifically identified for use in isolating a telescope’s optical line-of-sight (LOS) from aircraft base motion, achieving LOS jitter of 3 microradians or less . The sensor was developed with support from the U.S. Air Force High Altitude Balloon Experiment (HABE) program .
Applications
-
Aircraft Optical Reference: Line-of-sight stabilization for airborne telescopes and sensors
-
Space Qualified Systems: Satellite and spacecraft pointing applications
-
Jitter Elimination: Designed to eliminate jitter from airborne mirrors, optics, and lasers
-
