This Kern dissecting microscope stand was beautifully manufactured in Japan, probably in the 1960’s. The stand has been widely copied by various Chinese manufacturers and is currently available, however, the new stands are very inferior copies with plastic knobs and lack the fit and finish of the original. The rack & pinion focus drive is absolutely free of backlash, and the column is absolutely free of lost motion. The substage mirror is silvered on one side with an opal glass on the other.
The stand does not come with a cabinet. It is therefore lacking the two arm-rests that attach to either side of the stage. Also missing are the drop-in magnifiers for the loupe carrier. These are the standard size (24.5mm diameter). The clear glass stage area is 61mm deep and 65mm wide. The focus travel is 43mm. At its lowest point of travel, the top of the ring is 19.75mm above the stage glass. The base is 110mm in diameter, and the stage sits 117mm above the supporting table. The instrument is in perfect condition except for a couple of very minor marks in the lacquer on one side of the base (see last photo).
