GTE Sylvania Optical Attenuator Model 485

Description

This GTE Sylvania Optical Attenuator Model 485 comes from a working environment but has not been tested.

This item appears to be a rather esoteric type of laser attenuator using multiple symmetric wedge reflections. As a result, the beam does not appear to be offset. I could not discover any specification on the attenuator It includes three nested assemblies. The outermost black collar (with the nomenclature) has a flat for pin mounting, and a set screw for positioning the long blue sleeve. The blue sleeve has four index marks on its taper at ninety degree intervals and alternating red and white. The attenuator proper is in a long cylinder that is able to rotate within the blue sleeve. It is held in place with a pair of rubber �O�-rings. The knurled end that protrudes from the blue sleeve is graduated zero to 360 degrees at two-degree intervals. I assume this has to do with the polarizing nature of the reflective surfaces within the attenuator and depending upon the state of polarization of the laser source, the blue sleeve could be rotated to indicate the nominal preferred vibration direction. The attenuator would then be calibrated against a meaningful reference line.
