According to the unit operation and maintenance manual:

“The ES-488U features an independent Reader and Generator, which function simultaneously. It may be set to operate in one of two modes: Generate Mode and Regenerate Mode. In Generte Mode, the Generator is not jammed with the Reader data when the unit is set to the Read State. The Generator maintains its date. In Regenerate Mode, the Generator is jammed with the Reader data when the unit is set to the Read state. In this configuration the unit acts as a continuous Regenerator.”
