This is a simple cap analyzer intended to be placed over an eyepiece in a monocular microscope. The permitted vibration direction of the polarizing foil is indicated by two scribed white lines. This analyzer, along with an oriented polarizer (listed separately), formed the polarized light complement to the Trivert bright field / dark field / polarized light vertical illuminator.
The cell is in near-perfect condition, but unfortunately the polarizing film has significant delamination problems on one of the protective cover glasses (see photos). The delamination is severe enough that it renders viewing an image very problematic. This means that the cap analyzer is pretty much useless for its originally intended location, however the polarizing film itself is in perfect condition (absolutely uniform and exceedingly good extinction, without any evidence of bleaching). This means it could still be used as a high-quality polarizer in the non-imaging portion of an instrument.
