This is a Burleigh gimbal mount for optics or mirrors of 2 inches diameter. It is a true gimbal � both the azimuth and elevation axes are co-planar with the front surface of the mirror cell. The mounts are exquisitely made from three basic castings � two for each of the gimbal planes and one for the supporting plate. There are three basic subassemblies to the mounts. The gimbal mount with the micrometer spindles; the removable optic carrier mount; and the angle support plate. These mounts all come complete with all three components.

This version is a bit earlier � the micrometer spindles do not have the large plastic rings. Each axis has internal springs to keep the gimbal plates in contact with the micrometer spindles, and in addition, a spring-loaded plunger to augment stability. The position of the plunger can easily be changed so it will be effective in the range of motion required.

The second assembly is the optic cell. This entire assembly is held in place by a large knurled collar from the back. It is possible to remove the cell from the gimbal mount in order to install the optic of interest. The cell is designed so the reference plane of the mirror sits precisely in the gimbal plane. The front of the cell is chamfered so almost the entire mirror surface may be used when the incident light angle is less than or equal to 45 degrees. The cell will accept mirrors between 0.25 and 0.50 inches in thickness without additional spacers (thinner mirrors require spacer rings). The optic carrier includes a threaded retaining ring for the mirror.

The last component is a right-angle bracket for attaching the gimbal mount to a table. The gimbal mounting support plate attaches to the bracket with four Allen cap screws..

This item is a Klinger Model SK Gimbal Mount for optics of 51mm diameter. These gimbals are somewhat more sensitive for mirror adjustment than the SL type gimbals. This particular mount is unusual in that there are two methods for securing optics or mirrors. The first method is identical to that found in the more common SL type gimbal mounts. There is a spring-loaded ring with a pair of threaded posts to accommodate lenses or mirrors with edge thicknesses of up to 12mm. There is a recess in the gimbal mount machined for 51mm diameter lenses, with three precision bearing points that are perfectly matched to the common tilting planes for azimuth and elevation. The securing ring is likewise fitted with the three bearing points. The two posts are slightly asymmetrical in order to allow easier exchange of the components via the larger of the openings.

The second mode of mounting is for larger-than-specified 51mm mirrors. The recess on the opposite side of the ring mount is stepped and will accommodate mirrors in several sizes up to 63mm in diameter. There are three spring-loaded arms that secure the mirror into the appropriate recess. By reversing the mirrors so they face away from the mounting surface it is possible to use very steep grazing reflection angles.

This is a two-axis gimbal-type mirror / lens mount marketed by Coherent Optics, Model Number 58. The mounting is quite clever � the turning axes are cylindrical magnets that also act as bearings. Two Starrett micrometer spindles actuate the motions. They bear against additional magnetic pads. I am not sure how repetitive the positioning is but there doesn�t seem to be much play at all in the bores for the magnet bearings.

The mirror mount will accept mirrors up to 2� in diameter, and using the clamping ring supplied, between 0.350� and 0.700� thick if the ring is not to be set proud of the mounting face. Clear aperture of the mount is 1.875�. Aperture is reduced by the clamping ring to 1.750�. Tilting range of both axes easily exceeds plus or minus 6 degrees.

The mounting base is 3.875� by 2.000� wide and has two counterbores for � 20 cap screws 2� apart, centered on the optic axis of the mount. The optic axis is located 1.375� from the end of the mounting plate.

The mount is in extremely fine condition.

This Aerotech two-axis manual high-resolution gimbal mount may be operated in any orientation. Mounts are ball-bearing pivoted, and completely free of backlash. The mounts have excellent thermal stability, and are relatively light. Azimuth and Elevation adjustments are independent and orthogonal. The mirror is secured via clamping tabs, usually missing.

Angular resolution of the control knob is 0.11 arc seconds per 0.5 degrees of rotation.
Full range of motion is plus/minus five degrees in each plane
Maximum component diameter is 3�

These mounts are all in very fine condition and fully functional. They are the older version without the graduated adjustment knobs and a slightly different construction for the base enclosure. They may have very minor cosmetic issues such as tiny scratches in the finish, or minor fading of anodized parts. Part number is AOM 110-3.

These mounts are fully functional, however they have been modified, usually by machining away a portion of the base enclosure � sometimes rather drastically. The mounts are also missing the threaded retaining ring. Part number is AOM 110-3.
