This is an ISO port adapter from a Nikon Eclipse microscope (38mm diameter). The top of the adapter has a female 26mm diameter thread. This is obviously larger than a standard C-mount, and it is the wrong gender for a camera adapter. The inside of the adapter is lined with a black velvet flock paper. This modification does not appear to be factory original, and it is possible that the entire adapter is a special modification. The 38mm bore will also fit the Leitz (Leica) ISO ports.

The adapter is in excellent condition. There is some light evidence of use with a couple of burrs in the groove used to lock the adapter into the microscope tube.

This SZ-LA-10 ring light adapter threads into the base of the Scienscope SSZ series stereo microscopes. It has a 48mm diameter thread for attachment to the microscope body. A second internal thread (also 48mm diameter) allows one to attach additional accessories to the adapter. The outer diameter of the adapter is 2.000 inches. A relieved section of the tube is used to clamp the ring light to the adapter.

These adapters are unused in the original plastic bags.

Filter Cube G for Ploem Fluorescence Illuminators

This cube is one of the fluorescence modules available for the earlier Leitz Ploem illuminators. The type number is ‘G’. It is a low-specificity broad-band blue excitation system with a blue glass exciter filter and a dichroic beam-splitter at 510nm. The barrier filter is a K525 long-pass filter. The filter has extensive marginal delamination and should be replaced. New barrier filters are available from Chroma or Omega. It is also possible for the user to exchange the glass excitation filter with something more selective (also available from Chroma or Omega). The dichroic is precisely adjusted and should not be exchanged!

The dichroic is in perfect condition. This would make and excellent base for an exciter / barrier pair for fluorochromes such as FITC.

This is a special cube used in the Ploem epi-fluorescence illuminators that accept the earlier filter cube systems. It is marked ‘TL’ and is intended for use when normal transmitted light is to be employed. The excitation filter port is blocked with a metal cover to prevent stray UV light from interfering with observations. Also installed are a pair of glass plates, one in the position normally occupied by the dichroic beam-splitter, and the other in the barrier filter position. The purpose of these plates is to maintain a parfocal system when switching between fluorescence cubes and the bright field position. The angled plate also displaces the image axially to the same extent the dichroics do so that image registration is more easily accomplished when comparing fluorescence and bright-field images.

The cube is complete and in excellent condition.

Magnification Drum from Older Black Stereo Microscope

This is a complete magnification changing drum assembly from one of the earlier black Zeiss stereo microscopes (c. 1960’s). Each side of the microscope has its own set of lenses. The drum has six positions. Two positions opposite each other are open, and when either of these positions are selected the native magnification of the microscope is obtained (16x, when using 10x oculars). The other four positions have pairs of lenses that augment the magnification when oriented in one direction, and decrement the magnification in the opposite orientation. The magnifications possible with the instrument were 6x, 10x, 16x, 25x, and 40x.

These lenses in these drums are very prone to delamination and can seriously degrade the performance of the microscope. The lenses in these drums are in excellent condition. None of the elements appear to have any delamination problems. This is a scarce resource for restoring one of these vintage instruments.

This Carl Zeiss ocular certainly dates from the nineteenth century. The nickel-plated barrel of the optic is beautifully hand-engraved ‘Carl Zeiss, Jena’. The upper bezel is stamped ‘3’, and ‘Mikrometer’. It is focusable (sleeve fit, not captive), and there is a shelf on the inside diaphragm to receive a micrometer disk. No micrometer is present, however.

The lens is of standard diameter (23.2mm) and the glass is in excellent condition. The bezel shows a modest amount of wear (see photos).

Here is a wonderful condition Zeiss incident light objective with darkfield illumination capability (HD, for Hellfeld / Dunkelfeld). This objective is quite scarce – the magnification (6.3 times) places it in the early series of the Epiplan HD lenses which included 6.3, 10, and 25, not found in the far more prevalent later series. Numerical aperture of this lens is 0.16.

The thread diameter of the objective is 24 mm (the Zeiss “HD” thread), and the adjustment length of the lens is 33 mm (distance from the specimen to the thread seat when properly focused). This objective is therefore parfocal with the later Epiplan HD series. The lens is also corrected for flat field. The outer mirror bezel can be adjusted by loosening the lower set screw . This allows the user to carefully set the optimum illumination for the sample being observed. For most applications, the bezel can be left in the original factory set position. I am not certain about working distance of this particular lens – the objective is recessed quite a ways beneath the level of the reflector, however, and is therefore relatively well protected.

Condition of the objective is superb – no damage to the front lens, and no delamination anywhere. Even the chrome bezel is cosmetically close to perfect. Serial number of the lens is 4056408.
