Gaertner 4 Inch Traversing Slide

The M303 micrometer slide has four inches of travel. The carriage is threaded to accept the standard Gaertner measuring microscopes and telemicroscopes. The carriage ways are precision hand-scraped, and the leadscrew is hand-lapped to the nut. There is a special cam that tilts the nut as the carriage is positioned, thereby correcting any residual errors in the pitch of the lead screw.
This slide has been modified in the following ways. The coarse position of the carriage is usually indicated by a scale engraved on one of the chrome-plated carriage cover plates with an index mark fastened to the carriage. Both cover plates are plain on this slide, and the index mark is absent. The other modification involved replacing the graduated drum and vernier with hand-crank knob with a worm-wheel. The modifications did not alter any of the existing parts, but to restore this to its original functionality one would need to purchase the scale cover, the index mark, and the graduated drum assembly. It is also possible to send the slide to Gaertner for a digital readout retrofit adaptation.
The existing parts of the slide are in perfect cosmetic and functional condition. This was removed from a sealed assembly where it was used to remotely adjust the position of a component using a motorized worm. Being part of a calibration adjustment, the slide was very seldom operated as can be seen from the condition of the scraped ways.
