  • Bausch & Lomb 31-35-39 6.5V Step Transformer

    $95.00

This is an unusual variant of the step transformer commonly supplied with the Nicholas illuminator from Bausch & Lomb. It is similar to the type 31 35 28 transformer in that it has a three-wire line cord, but it only has a two-conductor output socket. There is also a fourth output step position marked ‘over-voltage’. This transformer would not be suitable to halogen lamps because they are highly sensitive to over-voltage conditions. The highest output position is 8v at 3 amps.

The transformer is in excellent cosmetic condition and is fully tested, working at all output settings. The bottom plate nomenclature states that the transformer is intended for use with catalog item numbers 31-33-40 and 31-34-27.

  • Leitz a10x Focusing Eyepiece for Binocular

    $45.00

This is a single focusing a10x ocular. This ocular will ONLY fit in the right-hand eyepiece tube of the Leitz series of binocular magnifiers. These magnifiers resembled inverted porro-prism binoculars and were supplied in three variations with fixed magnification objective lenses (0.7x, 1x, and 2x). They are unique in that the diameter of the ocular tube is 31mm (instead of the more common 30mm), and the length of the two ocular tubes differed. The left-hand tube would only accept the ‘fixed’ eyelens ocular, and the right tube the focusing ocular. Consequently, the shoulders on the two types of oculars were in different positions. Oculars were always supplied in pairs with one fixed and one adjustable eyelens.

These magnifiers were first produced in the 1920’s, and production continued in one form or another until around 1980. Around 1970 Leitz changed the tube diameter to the more conventional 30mm, so if you have a very recent magnifier, you should double-check to make sure this ocular will fit!

The lens is in very fine condition – just the typical wear in the enamel on the focusing knurl. The lens is in perfect condition although it does not appear to be coated. This lens would date from the early 1960’s or very late 1950’s judging from the font face on the ‘Germany’ engraving. It is more recent than the other a10x we have available.

This is an earlier Olympus eyepiece as supplied with their compound microscopes. It has a chrome-plated brass barrel with a black anodized front lens bezel. Nomenclature on the bezel reads:

    CK 10x
    Olympus Tokyo
    ‘Bi’

The glass is in near-perfect condition. The chrome-plated barrel does have some minor scuffing.

  • Leica 13410750 10x Wide Field Stereo Microscope Ocular

    $95.00

This ocular is the one standardly supplied with the 30mm wide tube GZ-series of StereoZoom microscopes from Leica Microsystems. The ocular has a 22mm field-of-view index (this is the diameter of the observable field when the microscope is set to 1x magnification.

This is for a single ocular. It is in optically perfect condition, but the cell does show evidence of having been dropped. The removable sleeve for installing reticles has some crimped areas, and there is a small rough area on the outside edge of the upper bezel. Neither blemish will affect the performance in any way.

  • Diagnostic Instruments Series 5000 C-Mount

    $280.00

This is an earlier Diagnostic Instruments CCD adapter assembly. The lower portion of the relay lens is removable and is unmarked as to magnification. The lower sleeve is of standard 23.2mm diameter and so will fit the normal phototubes that directly accept oculars. There is an adapter included which appears to act as a stop for the relay lens tube. This adapter is interchangeable with other clamp tubes allowing the item to be used on various microscope manufacturer’s phototubes that have a thin wall. The upper portion of the adapter has a standard C-mount thread. A relay lens in the upper portion may be moved through a range of approximately 13mm for parfocalization with the binocular image.

The adapter is in excellent condition.

  • Microscope Ocular Tube Focusing Telescope

    $66.00

This appears to be a generic copy (albeit a very good one) of the American Optical type 1265 phase focusing telescope. It is identical in form and function, missing only the identifying catalog number and manufacturer’s markings. The focusing telescopes work very nicely (focusing is via a sleeve mount) and are capable of imaging objects anywhere from 120mm away to infinity.

These focusing telescopes are new and unused inventory, however they do not include the original packaging. Phase telescopes are typically used to align phase rings for phase contrast work, as well as checking the alignment of lamp filaments by observing the exit pupil of the objective.

  • Melles Griot Quadruple Revolving Microscope

    $75.00

This quadruple nosepiece seems to have disappeared from the more recent Melles Griot catalogs. It is identical to the triple nosepieces but with four RMS threaded positions. The nosepiece is very well made, with two ball-bearing races akin to the Leitz nosepieces of similar vintage. The click-stop detent is internal and remains very positive. It is marked ‘Germany’.

The nosepiece is in excellent condition, however the lubricant is a bit stiff. It would benefit from a cleaning and relubrication but is functional the way it sits.

  • Fiber Optic Light Source with 150w Lamp Dual

    $180.00

The Volpi fiber optic illumination systems are among the finest produced. The Intralux 6000 was a top-of-the-line illuminator. It featured a three-position lamp intensity switch alternating between two direct connections to the transformer secondaries (no resistors in series for reducing intensity). The middle position switches off the mains supply.

A very quiet cage fan is positioned immediately behind the lamp socket and provides very ample cooling even with the higher intensity selected. Additional regulation of the lamp output is possible using a helical wedge that reduced the amount of light to the end of the fiber bundle. A special dichroic heat filter is interposed between the lamp and the fiber bundle. In addition, there is a slot on the top of the unit for reception of special filter carriers. An empty holder is supplied with the illuminator.

The illuminator uses type DDL halogen lamps (150w 20v). Access to the lamp socket is via a wide door on the top of the housing. Lamps are easily exchanged without the use of any tools. The port for the fiber bundles is 15mm in diameter, and has a small keyway used to prevent rotation of the gooseneck type (semi-rigid) bundles.

The lamp socket is in very good condition and holds the lamp very firmly. It may be easily replaced when required using a terminal block accessed after removing the door. The instrument is fully functional. Cosmetically, the finish of the housing does have a few scratches near the handle, and the rubber molded grip on the aluminum handle has frayed a bit on one end (see photo).

  • SZ-LA-10 Ringlight Adopted for Scienscope SSZ Stereo Microscope

    $20.00

This SZ-LA-10 ring light adapter threads into the base of the Scienscope SSZ series stereo microscopes. It has a 48mm diameter thread for attachment to the microscope body. A second internal thread (also 48mm diameter) allows one to attach additional accessories to the adapter. The outer diameter of the adapter is 2.000 inches. A relieved section of the tube is used to clamp the ring light to the adapter.

These adapters are lightly used. Threads are in excellent condition, but there may be light marks fin the clear anodized finish from clamp screws.

  • Leitz 563 486 + 563 346 AF Modulopak Vertical Illuminator

    $450.00

This Leitz modulopak vertical illuminator has the standard 42mm diameter annular dovetail change ring for attaching to the top of microscope stands of the generation that included, most notably, the Ergolux, Secolux, and Laborlux ME and HL. The upper housing includes a 1x infinity corrected tube lens and the mounting ring for the viewing tube. This illuminator must be used with infinity corrected objectives.

The central ‘brick’ contains a fixed Gauss beam-splitter for brightfield work, as well as an annular fully reflecting mirror for darkfield (both are on the same substrate glass so alignment is assured). This modulopak is a later version so the Gauss mirror does has a special dichroic coating that enables the attachment of the laser autofocus system. Above the mirror is a horizontal slot that accepts filter sliders, including analyzers for polarized light applications and interference contrast work (no filters are included). In the base of the housing is an annular condenser lens that is used when the darkfield method is employed. This ring focuses the light to a point somewhat above the objective lens turret where it then opens up into a cone that enters the top of the objective at an angle. This clever adaptation allows the design of darkfield objectives using standard RMS threads but it does mean that the distance of the objective from the illuminator is critical.

The illumination tube includes a recess for 35mm diameter mounted filters as well as a collector and relay lenses and three additional slots. The largest slot accommodates an included ‘F-Slide’ which has a precentered fixed aperture and field diaphragm. When this slider is moved to the alternate position a special darkfield system is engaged. This moves a central stop into the light path so the annular lens is then illuminated. There is also a neutral density filter that may be engaged on the bright-field side. This is very useful when alternating between bright and dark field illumination modes.

The second two slots are for an optional polarizer (for interference contrast applications) and a first order red compensator, also for interference contrast. Neither of these optional components are included – the original blank covers are present, however.

This illuminator is in perfect condition. The only marks on it are from a fiber optic adapter that was clamped onto the extension ring at the back of the illuminator. All optics are perfect and all adjustments work properly.

  • Photomicrographic Shutter

    $225.00

This is a complete Nikon PFX manual camera system with a Graflex 4×5 large format back. The only item missing is a cable release. The camera consists of several assemblies. The main assembly is the shutter system housing. It contains a beam-splitter system on a swing-out hinge. For faster shutter speeds the larger chrome knob on the side of the housing is set so the prism will automatically swing back into place after the exposure is completed. When using time exposures the knob is shifted so the prism remains swung aside until it is returned manually after closing the shutter. The mechanical shutter has timed speeds from 1 second to 1/250th of a second plus B and T. The shutter speed is selected using the chrome lever and is indicated in the small window above the focusing telescope port. The shutter assembly also includes the focusing telescope with format reticle installed. On the base of the shutter is a phototube adapter for standard RMS size monocular photo tubes.

The shutter accepts various size film backs. This camera includes the earlier version of the 4×5 lens cone with the annular ring for mounting the film back carrier. The cone includes a Graflex 4×5 adapter complete with matte focusing screen.

The entire camera is in perfect functional condition and superb cosmetic condition. All shutter speeds are exceptionally strong, even at the longest speeds.
