This 38mm objective lens is one element in the building block design of the Gaertner Measuring Microscope series. The objective is in a continuously threaded cell with a stop collar which is supplied with a set screw. This allows the magnification of the objective to be precisely set relative to a scale in the eyepiece tube adapter. Focal length is specified on these lenses rather than magnification.
When used with the most commonly supplied M242 10x ocular, the resulting field-of-view is 3.43mm in diameter, with a nominal magnification of 32x. The working distance is 47.8mm.
This lens is in good condition, but the stop ring has been cut (see photo). The coating on the lens surface is slightly crazed, but the glass is in excellent condition.
