– Measure about either vertical or horizontal axisModel D-600 Comparison Autocollimators apply a unique principle of autocollimation to compare and measure small angles with extremely high precision. Specifically, the instrument measures the difference in angle between two reflecting surfaces. A beam of collimated light from the instrument is divided to illuminate a reference mirror and a second mirror whose relative angle is to be determined. The patented design employs a unique arrangement of optical tipping plates coupled to a calibrated micrometer dial, where the relative angle is read when the images are aligned. Differences in angle of the returning beams can be measured with average repeatability of 1/10 arc seconds, either vertically or horizontally. The micrometer dial is graduated in 1/10 arc seconds, with each second numbered. One complete revolution of the dial is equal to 10 arc seconds with a total range of 120 arc seconds. Of utmost importance to precision is the fact that instrument movement during reading will only move the images in the field of view; it will have absolutely no effect on the reading. This fact eliminates the rigid mounting and extreme handling care demanded by other instruments, where any motion is translated directly into the micrometer reading.

It is missing the original Brown & Sharp micrometer spindle which measured to an accuracy of 0.0001 inches. The plate is equipped with a Brunson coincidence level, type 194.

This is a most unusual device from the manufacturer W & L. E. Gurley of Troy, NY. It is a very precise rotary table with an dual optical pick-off. A special split-field microscope reads opposite sides of a very accurate glass scale housed in the circular compartment beneath the rectangular ‘U-shaped’ upper frame.
Gurley is one of the earliest and most well-respected U.S. manufacturers of surveying equipment and this device reflects the high quality for which the firm is known. Similar to a high-end optical theodolite, the microscope is able to read the rotation of the central fixture (about 4 inches in diameter) to an accuracy of 1 second of arc. Gurley received a patent for the readout system used in this device. By taking simultaneous readings on opposite sides of the scale the effects of very minor eccentricities of the scale to the rotation axis are to a great degree nulled.
The U-system holding the microscope is 7 inches wide. The table has a post of 0.625 inch diameter that extends on the underside of the system to a distance of 1 inch. The table is equipped with a clamp system with a micrometer adjustment screw for extremely fine positioning capability.
The system is housed in a very heavy duty wood cabinet of excellent construction. Both the instrument and the cabinet are in exceptionally fine condition. The illumination system for the scale requires a small 3v supply, not included (simple batteries will do). There are a couple of xerox copies included with the instrument, one on the theory of operation, and the other instructions for taking a reading through the microscope. One extra lamp is included. This is very uncommon instrument that probably dates from the 1960’s, possibly a bit more recent.

Gaertner Scientific Microscope with Erecting Prism 32mm objective 10x Eyepiece
$375.00This microscope is very modular. The central component is the drawtube with focusing mechanism. The body of the instrument is fitted with a long 1 inch diameter threaded flange. The thread allows the microscope to be attached to various Gaertner instruments, such as the precisions cross slides, instrument bases with cross-support arms, among others. The rack and pinion focusing has a range of 38mm. The nominal optical tube length of the microscope is 160mm.
The basic microscope is supplied with a straight ocular adapter, however these instruments have the optional inclined image erection prism installed instead of the straight tube. The ocular is the standard type M242 Ramsden 10x.
Gaertner objectives are continuously threaded over their entire length (RMS standard thread) and have a locking ring. The continuous thread allows precise adjustment of the magnification ratio of the instrument when using micrometer eyepieces or filar eyepieces. Focal length of the objectives supplied with these instruments is 32mm (Gaertner part number M220).
With the addition of the erecting prism adapter, the normally inverted image produced by the standard Gaertner measuring microscopes is ‘re-inverted’ by use of a special roof prism. The M193 adapter also inclines the ocular at an angle of 60 degrees. The Gaertner catalog number is M193.
The adapter also increases the effective optical tube length of the microscope 26mm. The effect of this increase is to slightly increase the magnification while slightly decreasing the working distance and the field of view. The erecting prism replaces the standard eyepiece tube adapter. These normally have their own spider cross lines installed, however we often get them in with missing cross lines. These are offered at a reduced price. Glass reticles or scales may be installed by the user.
As outfitted, the instrument has the following characteristics:

2.29mm diameter object fieldThese microscopes are in very fine condition cosmetically, and in perfect optical condition. Please note that they do not include the cross line reticle! Also lacking on these instruments is the one inch locking nut for the microscope thread.
